View Full Version : stopping zoloft after a short period...is tapering necessary?

I was prescribed a low dose of Zoloft (50 mg) by my OB due to having issues with postpartum depression. My baby is now 5 months old, and I feel my hormones and emotions have stabilized to an extent where I can stop taking the medication (besides of which, I think it is having sexual side effects and giving me numb emotions). Is it necessary to taper this dose down or do I just stop taking it? I have been on it for 4 months now. I am not seeing a psychiatrist, as I mentioned, my OB prescribed this for me.

Some people can just stop. For myself, I've always had withdrawal symptoms and tapering slowly has been necessary. I've never been on Zoloft, but the other SSRI's, which are simliar, have given me problems. If you want to be certain to avoid any withdrawal discomfort, better to taper gradually. Or you could try cold turkey because some people don't have problems. Good luck!

To go cold turkey off of any anti depressant is a gamble. Some people do get lucky and have little to no withdrawal issues but others end up paying a heavy price. The discontinuation syndrome is very real and doctors are finally admitting that it does exist. If I were you I would not take the risk.

take care
