I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with my son (he is now 3) I ended up on insulin and ended up with a big baby (10.8) when I was pregnant I had this unexplained vaginal itch (sorry if this is TMI) they did tests and even said they didnt know why. I had another baby 16 months later and was told I didnt have GD although I gained alot of weight and the baby was 9.1 The itch I had never went away I still get it all the time, I have seen 2 different specialists and about 3-4 family doctors. I am still over weight from having kids (about 50lbs)
Anyways I was wondering if anyone knows if this would be connected to type 2...I think I was tested once since the birth of my son but it was a urine test.

It doesn't sound indicitive of diabetes. I don't think I've ever heard of that being associated with diabetes. It sounds more like a yeast infection or possibly an allergic reaction of some sort. Maybe try changing your laundry soap to a perfurm and dye free type. Are you using scented toilet paper or anything or are you using some form of heavily perfumed body wash or soap? Because you've had GD and you are still overweight, perhaps having a test for diabetes wouldn't hurt. Good luck!:)

I have been reading alot on the internet about the itch (of course we all know dont believe everything you read right LOL) but I have had no luck with the doctors, they just say they dont know and give me a prescription to get rid of the syptoms not fix the problem.
I have come across many sites that say that yeast infections are common with diabetes...problem is that the doctors cant say for sure this is a yeast infection and none of the treatments work. The reason I asked was I was looking on another board (cant even remember what it was) and someone said they had a different kind of yeast infection not the candida one and reg treatments didnt work. It ended up being a diet thing. I just wondered about the diabetes because thats when it started, when I had gestational diabetes. But I was never given another blood test (like the ones I had when I was pregnant) The last time I mentioned it to my doctor he just had me leave a urine sample and said everything was fine...is that enough or should I be tested every so often with a blood test????

I was plagued with constant yeast infections for at least 3-5 years before being diagnosed with T2. I believe I'd probably had it for quite a while before being diagnosed.
Since you are overweight and did have gestational diabetes, you are at much greater risk for T2. I'd strongly suggest you get your doctor to do a glucose tolerance test to rule it in or out. Blood tests may not be sufficient, as the fasting numbers are often the last to go high, while you could be getting quite high blood glucose after eating.
Meanwhile, the only thing that actually cured my yeast infection was Diflucan. Not only did it effect a cure, but I didn't get another yeast infection for several years (by this time I was diagnosed and being treated for T2), and that one was also cured with Diflucan and I've never had another one since.

Thanks for the responses :) I was at the drs today and requested Diflucan and we talked about tests...I asked if we had done a test and he said that they tested my urine when I had surgery (begining of feb) and everything was ok but he said that that really didnt mean anything so he gave me a sheet for a blood test and said that it wasnt really nessasary for a fasting test...is this true???? I just want to get the most accurate information as I dont want to find out way later down the road that I do have type 2 and thats what has been causing me this grief...although if I test negative I think I still need to follow the same diet guidelines. Well I am going for the test tomorrow so we will see and I will update...and please if anyone has any thoughts on if thats the right test (I just remember when I was pregnant I had to fast and drink that yucky orange drink)
Thanks

Oh I also wanted to ask this...if you are not having the fasting test done, should you eat a normal meal and then go for the test???? like when is the best time to get accurate results...I really dont understand how they can get the right results without timing what you eat and when you ate it like I had to do when I was doing all my finger testing with GD.
Thanks again :)

I'm not really understanding what he is sending you for. Is he sending you for a random glucose test that you can go get at any time of the day? I highly suggest a glucose tolerance test (where you drink the orange stuff). A random may not show anything depending on when you last ate and what you last ate, because a t2 is not always in a high range. Perhaps you should try another family doctor. This one doesn't sound like he's taking things all that seriously. Just my opinion. Another thing you could do, is go buy a glucose meter are start testing yourself. Some of them only run like $20 and you can get them in the drug store. Just make sure you get the strips too or the drum for it, depending on what kind you get. And I too promote the Diflucan. It works very well and is so much easier and not messy!
Good luck and keep us posted!

Well, I suppose if you want the most accurate test, for a random that is, although I don't suggest this for diagnosis...but eat what you normally eat and get tested at the 2hr mark. Although I am not sure how you are going to do this, as you can't exactly know how long you will be waiting in the lobby etc. You might want to call his office and ask he change it to a glucose tolerance. Demand if you have to! It is your health, not his.;)

Thanks...I might just wait and give my dr a call...I would love to get a new family doctor but they arent that easy to come by here. I went to see him when my daughter was 3 months old and told him I thought I was having problems with my gall bladder and he says no it sounds like you have back problems so he told me to go to physio so I did and the therapist said I didnt have back problems it sounds like my gall bladder...so after I paid 50 dollars to have physio I went back to the doctor told him what the therapist send and he sent my for an ultrasound and sure enough my gall bladder was completely blocked and full of sludge...I had it removed a month later. He seems to listen to me more now and I can basically walk in there and tell him what I think and he listens but I still have a hard time walking in to the office and demanding certain things (I have to work on this) LOL
Anyways I will give them a call today when the office opens,

I also have had that problem. It seems like every new Dr. that I have I need to train to listen to me. It's too bad that Dr. are this way because we are the best diagnostic tool they could use if they choose to use it. Fear not it's just a time matter, sooner or later he or she will come around. They have to evaluate each new patient in order to know whether the signals that they recieve from then are really viable or not. Once they find out that your opinion is not an imagined symptom they will rely more and more on what you tell them.
