View Full Version : Is Astigmatism Dangerous?

Is astigmatism dangerous?

I'm in my 20s and have astigmatism. Things are very blurry without eyeglasses, I have them on all the time.

Unfortunately, each year my vision is becoming worse.

My job requires me to be on the computer so that's most likely affecting it.

My eyeglasses prescription always says 2 years, but I need to go back every 6 months but I push it to close to a year. And they increase the strength.

Is it dangerous in a way that I will eventually go blind?

Or is this condition fluctuating and will adjust to a "stable" level at some point in my life... hopefully soon?

I am scared about this, when I ask the optometrist they're always like it's no big deal, but my vision isn't getting better.

For example, last year I used to see -although blurry - the alarm clock time, but now it's completely illegible.

Jack, first of all, do you happen to know what your prescription is? That would be helpful. It could be that your refractive error (assuming you have one) is getting worse along with the astigmatism.

Normally, astigmatism is not a great concern. It's extremely common. There are severe types though (such as keratoconus) where the cornea becomes quite pointed). If your eye doc doesn't think you have such a condition, don't worry.

There are special contact lenses for astigmatism (used to be toric, but there's something newer) that work by reshaping the cornea.

There is also laser surgery now for astigmatism. This is done after the eyes have stopped changing which is usually in the mid-twenties.
