I've read a lot on here about limiting to a 30/40/30 (carb/protein/fat) diet, but I don't know what that means or how to calculate it. I think I am eating far too much protein to compensate for the less carbs. I think I am eating roughly 50g/day. Does anyone know the safe amount as to not fry the kidneys? Currently my diet is 1400 cals/day.

30/40/30 means 30% of your calories are from carbs, 40% from protein and 30% from fat

First of all you need the data. You can find it on labels and the internet.

I'm in Canada. Everything here is in grams.
Labels usually show the number of calories and grams of fat, carb and protein.

There are usually 4 calories per gram of carb, 4 calories per gram of protein and about 9 per gram of fat.

So I make a list with 5 columns for everything I ate in a day

Food Calories grams/protein grams/carbs grams/fat

I then add up the columns of calories, the grams of protein, the grams of carbs and grams of fat

I multiply the total grams of protein by 4, grams of carbs by 4, grams of fat by 9.

If add these up, it should come very close to the total number of calories

The grams of protein multiplied by 4 gives the number of calories that come from protein and should be 40% of my total calories.

I also have a column and add up the total grams of fiber. I do try to get more than 30g of fiber per day.

Find out what your ratios are. If your carb count is too low, you have to be more selective on your carbs.

If your diet is 1400 calories and you want to get 30% from carbs, you need 420 calories from carbs, or about 105g of carbs.

Many diabetic would struggle here. So the trick is to pick high fiber carbs and those with a low GI. Lentils are my favorite source of carbs. Very low GI and very high in fiber.

I know this sounds overly complex. I don't do this every day. I do this once in a while.

If any questions don't hesitate to ask them. This is really important stuff for a proper diet. IMHO.

Or, make a small list of what you ate in a day, with the calories for each and I'll do a small sample for you
