Regarding Forteo and midsection wt gain. I'm so glad I found this board. I've been concerned for months about gaining weight esp in the stomach/waist. I've been dieting, being very careful what I eat, but the weight keeps coming. In two days I will have completed the treatment and then I'm on to "reclast." Hopefully, I will then lose this weight. My question, has anyone completed treatment and had success losing weight?

In response to your weight gain question, I was on Forteo and didn't really notice any gains, but then I am small and don't really pay attention to my weight because I pretty much eat healthy, exercise and don't limit myself. But in the first four weeks after I finished my Forteo course, my pants got loose and when I got on the scale, realized I had lost 6-7 lbs. without trying! I did have a good time putting them back on, and I like reading that they say it is a good thing to be a little heavier as we get into our later years!

I've not found Forteo to cause weight gain for me, just that flabby roll in the abdomen which hasn't gone away nor increased since I quit giving my Forteo in the abdomen. I think it was more muscle tone than weight or fat. I'm well into my 3rd year on Forteo. I had GREAT improvment my first two years on it. But won't know until July or August what this 3rd year has done. I'm thinking that I'll either take a break from any osteoporosis product or go to an every other day regimen w/the Forteo. But we'll see what my endocrinologist and I come up with when I see him in May.

I can say that Forteo is one med I've been very happy with. One med that has done what they say it could do that hasn't also caused unpleasant side effects. And frankly, one injection a day was a welcome relief from having to pop yet another pill!

I took a vacation from my one Crohn's disease med and it was WONDERFUL while it lasted! Stopping that one med a day dropped 16 capsules from the pill popping routine! Ahhhhhh. So nice to just take 2 tiny immunosuppressive pills and 1 multivitamin w/iron tablet a day!!!! (Especially after 9-10 years of that 16 capsules a day!). But, have had some minor indications that it is time to get real and add those 16 capsules a day again. *sigh* The "vacation" sure was nice while it lasted!!!

Hello,

This is my 1st time on this board. I am 58 and recently diagnosed with Osteoporosi (numbers over -3.1 on Bone density test for hips/shoulder etc). My GP wants to put me on Actinol but I have other things complicating me taking this drug:
1. I have Barretts Esophagus and very bad acid reflux to begin with and had a Nissen Fundiplication last May to try to abate the acid from entering my esophagus. I also have had procedure to ablate precancerous cells in my esophagus . My father died of cancer of the esophagus so do not want to go down that route. Actinol I have been advised contributes to acid reflux and esophagitis and also Necrosis of the jaw.

I am wondering if anyone has gone to a specialist that treat only the osteoporosis. I would love any information on Forteo or any information that you can provide a neophyte when I have my meeting with my GP regarding medications or treatment plans.

Any names of doctors that you are visiting especially in the New York area would be gratly appreciated.

Would love to hear from anyone.
Regards

You definetly do not want anything in the same class as Actonel like Boniva and Fosomax. They are way too hard on the esophagous. I have the same problem and need info on Forteo. They have suggested the once a year infusion but I think the side effects are not that well known yet and jaw necrosis has occurred. They say it is rare and usually for people being treated for cancer but they also say get your dental work done before you start it so that doesn't make me feel secure and how do you know what you will need done. May I ask how old most of you are? Somehow it seems to me that age has got to make a difference in how it is treated. The other alternative is Evista.

Hi, I am just turning 57 years old. I am thinking of going to an Osteoporois center in New York for do not have great faith in local doctors. I have just been diagnosed and in fact waiting until My 7th for my visit with my GP to go over alternatives. If anyone has any information or give me some direction or a doctor name I would greatly appreicate it/
Kind Regards,
Mary from NJ

Stay AWAY from RECLAST it was formerly Zometa which is a biphosphonate and it created jaw necrosis for me.

I'm on Forteo and have had no weight gain in the stomach

Mistsy, thank you for that information. I really don't want to go on it because I still will probably have to have some dental work. Were you having dental problems or did this come out of the blue. I just don't trust the stuff, like I didn't trust Estrogen/Progesterone and I didn't take it when it was being shoved at me at every turn. I am willing to do the Forteo but need to get some financial help.

Mitsy,
I'm sorry to hear that you suffered jaw necrosis. How bad was your jaw necrosis, did this happen after going to the dentist? It seems like when I need the dentist I do and I couldn't wait for that medication to go out of my system or whatever. Were you able to heal from this?

Hello,

I'm new here. I am SO happy to have found this site!

46, female with a -4 t scores. I've been on the once-a-month medication for about three years now - not a lot of improvement.

I was just recently (started my first dose yesterday) prescribed Forteo. With all the talk about the “belly tire” – can we inject in other places - let’s say where we wouldn’t mind a few extra pounds? I hope that this is not an inane question.

Thank you!

Allie

During the clinical trials the participants either injected in the belly area or in their thigh. I just stuck to those places. I don't know if it would work as well in other areas. I know I first wanted to do my butt since it wouldn't hurt so much but never tried it.

My experience has been that it doesn't matter where you inject, the area effected is the stomach/waist. I injected in the thighs and the buttocks, but still have the weight around the waist. I have completed the course of Forteo, but still am gaining weight. I've always been a normal or thin person so this is very disconcerting.

Hey Jak40!

I have been using Forteo for over 3 months and have noticed midsection weight gain as well! I look puffy and swollen in the stomach. I just hate it! I am almost 51 and have always been thin and had a good figure, not since starting the Forteo. I wondered about calling my Dr., I think I have had chest pains...and still have leg cramps on occasion. Also thought maybe my muscles were getting weaker...or is this just my imagination? Anyway, I can totally relate to the midsection weight gain problem.

Hi Forteo Girl
FYI I have been off this medication for at least 6 weeks and I'm still fighting the weight. I exercise almost every day, carefully watch my calorie intake and still I'm putting on more weight than I've ever had. I questioned my dr about this and he looked it up on his computer. He told me there is no connection between my weight gain and the Forteo. I don't believe him. This is too much for me to accept. I'm up about 10 lbs now, with the most in the mid section. I absolutely hate it. This didn't happen until I'd been on Forteo for about a year. I'm interested in your progress and what your dr tells you. Regarding your cramps, I looked up this same problem when I first started Forteo and someone had posted a solution: CoQ10 and B vitamins. This helped a great deal and I was able to finish the 2 year program.
