Hi Erin
Today is first day I can sit! Am in lots of pain (I am positive you are too!) but made it through and now need to recover. Thank you so much for your concern and prayers. I am pretty loopy from pain meds so I'll sign off for now.

Hi Erin
Feeling much better today! Off pain meds except nsads. I had the dreaded complete "hyster" surgery but am feeling very good today.
Now about you... Tell me how your recovery is going, especially your walking.
Are you in much pain? And are you still fond of your collar? How is sleeping?
Is swallowing any bettter with the reduced hardware or is it too soon to tell?
I think about you a lot!
fondly

July,
I was overjoyed to see your post!! Yahoo for you, I mean the not having to take any pain meds! I'm so glad to hear you're doing well!!
As for me, no complaints! My legs don't hurt at all anymore, amen!!! My arm continues to have some problems but very reasonable and do-able! I think my throat is going to make a full recovery. It's a bit too soon to tell, but it definitely feels different. I don't feel the pressure on it like before. The collar is...well it's a collar...what can I say? It doesn't really go with any of my shoes or outfits, but it's definitely a center piece! HA!HA!
OK, what's the deal with my sleep? I think because my body is used to being very active, laying in bed all day and being a professional coach potato is not helping me sleep. My family goes to bed and I try to sleep, too. Hour after hour, I stare at my ceiling wondering how my friend July is doing and how great an ice cream sundae would be at 2:00a.m. I've tried watching TV, but that keeps me up longer, so I don't do that anymore. Baths help! But it's a tough balancing act; going to bed at a decent time and waking up before breakfast is over!! This too shall pass!
I'm still in some pain. But because I've been in pain for so long, it's probably worse than I give it credit! One of my girlfriends is a nurse and she is constantly telling me not to push myself too hard because I'm so used to pain that my tolerance is high!!
OK, my neck is screaming at me, gotta go! I truly am happy for you!! Keep yourself on the mend and don't overdue it. Here's a novel concept...ASK FOR HELP!!! Don't do everything yourself...He-woman!!!
luvs and blessings,
Erin

Hi Erin: I tried going back to work and it was too early must call in tomorrow and say sorry...
Anyway You sound like you are in fabulous spirits!!!! The one thing I want to read is that you tossed away your cane! Is that too ambitious to hope for?
You sound wonderful, how much longer will you be in the collar?
I'll bet you can't wait to have your hair done! Very gingerly though. I go to a salon that has special sink chairs to protect the neck and it doesnt hurt at all. I have highlights, lowlights and long hair and the first time I had them done after surgery I didn't trust reclining in salon sink so I had my husband drive me home so I could stand in the shower to wash the gunk out, drive me back for the trim and blow. And I tell you it was worth the effort because even though I was still in that Aspen collar and it was getting tattered my hair felt great!
Sleep always eludes me as pain hurts more at night because there is no one to talk to, and you are more focused on the pain. Also for me almost every Narcotic pain killer kept me wide awake as though I had drank 2 red bulls! The only one that makes me sleepy is demerol which I find is too scary to take more than a couple of days. So I read and passout when exhausted!
Have a wonderful day

Hey July,
You tried to go back to what????
Here's the secret to healing....REST, REST and more REST!!!
I've been away at our family cabin all weekend. It's a long drive but I did great! Each day I am feeling better! This recovery is so different from the last one!! I'm still in my Aspen collar, the doc said I can stop wearing it, but with the extra travel and movement, I've taken a conservative approach and kept it on. I take it off when I'm at home or just resting at the cabin. My sleeping habits are improving, too.
The HAIR!!!! I cut mine right before the surgery thinking it would be easy to care for. I had long hair, too! I cut it right above my shoulders in a cute bob style (I had never done that before!) and I get highlights as well. But I haven't dared walk into the salon yet! What a mistake to cut it short because now it's not quite long enough for a full ponytail but long enough to look awful! My solution has been twisting it up into a clip. Crazy what we don't think of! My incision is healed enough now that I can get it wet. So now I can wash ALL of my hair now. How gross is not washing your hair for more than a week! Worse has happened, I guess. Overall, looking forward to continued progress. I think I'm going to try driving again this week.
As for you, rest yourself, don't overdue it!! How's everything healing? Have you been back to the doctor for post op visits? July, give yourself time to heal well! Don't put too much undue stress on your body! I know your a fighter, but there's no need to push too hard!
Take care,
Erin

Hey Erin!
Had a neck day today. Had a visit from that little invisible guy who likes to take a mini jack hammer to my neck today.
I forget I am not "Wonder woman" and lately am "surgical recovery woman" and I can't do alot and it frustrates me no end. Ahh well this will pass.
How is your walking? Are you cane free??? You sound amazingly inspirational in your posts.
Keep it up!;)

Hi July,
Take it easy and allow yourself permission to relax. I know it's hard to do, but you owe it to yourself, you've been through a lot!
I've been doing great! There is such an amazing difference in me physically and emotionally. I feel like I'm getting "myself" back. Just talking about this idea with hubby last night made me cry!! However, because I'm such a knuckle-head, last week I smashed my finger in the car door,(had brace on and meds workin' well) and broke it in two places! What a nerd! I like to blame the drugs for everything, but I guess I just wasn't paying attention. Anyway, it's now in a splint and healing well. It's my index finger on my left hand and of course I'm left handed! Typing has been crazy one finger down!!
I am completely free of the cane, I don't even limp anymore!! Woo-Hoo! My right arm is still affected, slightly. Same symptoms, less intense. The headaches and I have come to an agreement, they stay and a reasonable level, I don't complain about them! Overall, I'm doing great. I want to go back to the gym and walk in the pool for resistance training, light arm/leg work. But I don't want to blow it and end up where I was. I'm trying to stay patient! IT'S SOOO HARD!!!
Take care and get some R&R,
Erin

I am so blown away you are not using the cane!!!!!!! I cannot tell you how badly I felt when you first posted you had to resort to one. I know you are just as active as I am and it is really really sad to see see yourself decline.
OK so now we are both on the mend (sorry about your finger!) so I can share my tragically funny story which I know you can relate to.
I am relatively tall and have a suv. 6 months back I was in a hurry to go to Costco and (I swear this is true! ) I am in my driveway and I open my drivers door quickly yanking it and the top corner of the door SMASHED me right in nose! Blood everywhere! Then I start trying to call my husband who is in the back yard for help, trying to hold my nose up & back (but neck doesnt go back far anymore) bleeding and calling for him, but of course at that time I still didnt have my voice back. he didnt hear me. You wouldn't believe the blood trail i had going on in the driveway.
Yes I broke it! Instead of going to Costco went to a local ent dr. who said yep its broken!
Of course none of this is my fault as even though I was only taking ibuprofin that day I couldnt "dodge" the door as I cant move my neck like I used to!
Right?
Anyway thats my excuse and I am sticking with it and honestly I'll never yank a door open again! :)
Good to hear you are doing so well.

July,
That made me laugh out loud!! That's a pretty good story, not that breaking your nose is funny, but.... I'm trying to imagine the look on your husband's face when he finally saw you! I would have laughed and cried trying to explain myself! I soo get that!!!! Thanks for the laughs!!! It makes me feel better!
It is so exciting that we are both on the mend!! Yahoo!!! Let's just be smart about recovery! I'm so tempted to go to the gym. Before this all started I was about 130 lbs./5"6" in good health. Now I'm about 160 lbs. I just want to get back into shape! I've got a long road ahead of me!! My husband and I walked the kids (both girls, 4 and 6) down to the park after dinner last night and that felt so good. I was able to walk without much pain!! Each day is a little better!!
Take care,
Erin
