My 8yr old son has struggled with stomach problems since infancy. He has also had trouble w/ behavior disorders. I have tried to get help from drs from the very begining. They all had their own ideas. First was that he was allergic to infant formulas but that it was no big deal because he was primarily breast fed. Then when he was on table food the said he had acid reflux. Antacids worked for a while but , he did end up in the ER once. When he was four one dr was going to do an upper GI but the symptoms disappeared before the date of the test. The next dr decided that it really was acid reflux but that it was brought on by stress. Then the symptoms got worse. Originally he suffered from vomiting only it would be after eating and other than that he would not seem ill it would continue anywhere from a couple days to several weeks then dissapear. Recently the vomiting began 2+ times every week. We began to think he was overeating. Then he began to have bm accidents which we soon discovered were do to constipation. Out of frustration and desperation i began to keep a food log of everything he ate and drank anytime he had an upset stomach vomited or had an accident. It took less than a week to notice a definte pattern. Citrus fruit and citric acid. If he had a small amount he would get an upset stomach if he had very much he would vomit. We have started him on vitamins (free of citric acid) and a diet free of citrus and citric acid. and believe me that is not easy citric acid is in nearly everything. But shouldn't drs have noticed signs of food allergy/sensitivity? I found a website that listed symptoms of food allergy/sensitivity and he fit the bill on several symptoms dark circles under his eyes vomiting constipation behavior disorders. If anyone has experience with this or any ideas on how to make this easier I would love to hear them.
