View Full Version : something strange going on, low blood sugar?

Just walking half way down town, which isn't very far has caused me to break out into a cold sweat (badly sweating it leaves like sweat patches), my brain feels like it's shutting down, my vision turns blurry and I feel nervous and sick to my stomach. The only thing that fixes it is to have a sugary drink or lollies. Which I know in turn will only cause this to happen again in a few hours. I'm not overweight, if anything my BMI is on the lower side (but not underweight. OOPS update, I calculated my BMI here it came up as 18.2 kg/m2 = Underweight, but that's by hardly anything cos 18.5 is healthy.

I get this almost everyday, especially if I haven't slept well or i have to walk some place etc. At the moment I just moved back home and I'm looking for a part time job (i previously was doing full time work but had this same problem every day and wound up very run down getting sick all the time, chest infections etc). it kind of leaves me out of looking for customer service type jobs which I would want to do, because I get sweaty and nervous all the time & my brain feels spaced out. It has got to the point where it is controlling my life.

I also have half & half nails (half pink and half very pale almost white nails). I've previously had problems with quite severe iron deficiancy anemia but I don't remember it causing symptoms like these, I forgot to mention I wake up several times a night to urinate, not always even much comes out it's just as soon as I feel the urge I wake up instantly.

You aren't eating enough. If you are diabetic, underweight and having lows every day that means you are not eating nearly enough food. Go see a dietitian right away. You need to eat charbohydrates. Sugary drinks will get your blood sugar up in a hurry but you need to eat a granola bar or a bagel to sustain normal blood sugar. You should be eating 5 times a day. Breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner...and if need be a bed time snack too.
You need to balance your food intake with your insulin and your daily activities. It is a constant balancing act that over time just become habit.

Whether you are diabetic or not, it appears as the other poster said that you need more fuel, 3 meals/day, 2-3 snacks/day, to decrease the shakey feelings and brain fog.

I would recommend protein, complex carbs and a little fat with each meal/snack. Protein, complex carb and fat will be digested more slowly thus promoting more even blood sugars.

For example:
Breakfast-eggs or egg whites/slice whole grain bread with a healthy margarine. 1 cup 1/2 - 1% milk.

Snacks: hand full of nuts/ cup of unsweetened yogurt/peanut butter and crackers/ lowfat cheese on crackers.

Lunch/dinner: 3-4oz meat/poultry/fish/soy burger or garden burger.
whole grain bread, brown rice, wheat spaghetti or wheat
couscus/veg/small sving fresh fruit.

Avoid or decrease sweets and caffeine.

Hope this helps.

Hey thanks! I went to the doctor today and he said it sounds like low blood sugar i'm describing. But we wouldn't need to bother with a fasting test. Just that i'll need to eat smaller more frequent meals a day because, not everyone's body's work the same. I should start to feel better, i'm positive I will. And also to keep hard candy (like barley sugars) on me in case.

Eating 'supper' before bed should also help me cos I never really do! I may have a cup of tea but it doesn't contain carbs, so he suggested milo and a couple of gingernut cookies.

I got a kidney function and iron test done too, won't get the results back til monday probably. My nails were mostly caused by a vitamin or mineral deficiancy and I mentioned I started on a good supplement so I'll just continue with that.
