hi all...
so i had an abnormal pap back in november 07(it came back LGSIL)... i had a colposcopy with 5 biopsies which showed no LGSIL, just inflammation.. my dr told me to come back in 6 months and have a repeat pap.. well i did that, and i just received the news today that my pap was LGSIL again.. they want me to do another colposcopy.. what is going on here? is it possibly something was overlooked the first time around? it just seems weird to me that i went through this whole thing 6 months ago and am going to be having to get yet another colposcopy.. any info would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi gb04-
Sorry you're going through this. Did your Dr. tell you your HPV status? My Dr told me that with atypical or LSIL results, the first path is to "wait and watch" which is probably why you were told to come back in 6 mos. The inflammation could be causing the changes being picked up by the PAP so the Dr. probably wanted to see if the inflammation subsided over 6mos and then the cervix would return to normal. Since the PAP is still abnormal, she probably just wants to repeat the colpo to make sure it's still just inflammation and that there's no progression. Hope this helps.
thanks mommyandwifey!! do you mean that the inflammation is causing LSIL results? i thought only hpv changes cause LSIL results... my dr did not tell me my HPV status, but basically assumed i had it based on two paps coming back LSIL.. i am just wondering, if i do have LSIL, why didn't it show up on my first colposcopy when 5 biopsies were taken?

Yes...I've read that inflammation can cause mild abnormalities on the cervix. On the Bethesda rating system it can be called ASCUS and on the CIN rating system, it can be called CIN 1 or LSIL.
Hope this helps. Feel free to ask any questions you'd like.

I don't know much about squamous dysplasia, but I highly recommend you ask your doctor for an ECC (endocervical curettage) when you have your next colposcopy. It scrapes the endocervical canal (the inside of the donut) for cells the doctor can't see with the colposcopy. I had atypical cells in that canal, not on the outer part of the cervix.
i BELIEVE she did the ECC on the first colposcopy--i remember her saying that "this particular biopsy is the one some women say hurt more".. she had already taken 4 regular ones.. then she said i might feel a light scraping.. so i'm assuming this is when she did the ECC.. if she did do that, then it did indeed, come back normal

Have you asked for copies of your pathology reports? If not, I suggest you do. That will give you more information about what biopsies/tests have been taken and is found.
