My husband was just given a prescription for avandia, i just read where there is a recall because of a 43% risk of a heart attack, while taking this, my husband has already had 2 slight ones, so we have decided against Avandia, can anybody recall the name of the new drug that has recently been released, it helps the insulin production that your body already produces, just read about it and cannot recall the name. Anyone?

The ones I have heard of are Byetta and Januvia. There is also a version of Januvia with Metformin called Janumet.
But there are others.

avandia is of the class of meds known as thiazolidinediones, the other med which has yet to be grouped with avandia in regards to cardiovascular risk/mortality is actos
januvia and byetta are the other medications that stimulate insulin synthesis and secretion

There is not a 43% risk of heart attack when taking Avandia. Actually it is a 43% increase in the risk. This means if the risk with no medication is 1%, then the risk of taking Avandia is 1.4%. That is a lot less scarier.
However, the overall risk was small. Among the 15,560 Avandia patients there were 86 heart attacks and 39 deaths, compared with 72 heart attacks and 22 deaths among the 12,283 patients not taking Avandia.
