I have been on oxycodone(75-90 mgs a day) for a few years. Also on Elavil 15 mgs. at bedtime. OK....so I am so overweight from the Elavil and start to taper very slowly.....and the weight is improving. OMG! The weirdest dreams and feeling like I don't know if I am awake or asleep....nightmares and feelings like I am flying around the room. I never did any drugs but I would imagine it would be comparable to a bad "trip". Very scary to say the least. I got up from an almost paralyzed state of sleep and took 1/4 elavil......it went away. So I am assuming that it is a withdrawal symptom of elavil. Just curious to know if anyone here on opiates and AD's have had a similar experience. It is as if the opiates were stronger and reacted differently.....Weird. Thanks much. Sharonn

Meds can do some really weird things. I know when I first went on oxycontin. I had some wild dreams.

I think cutting your dose back slowly is a good idea. You might want to talk to your prescribing doctor on how to handle this.

Good luck and keep us posted. We care.

Hey Sharonn, I've known several people, including myself, that have had bizarre dreams or nightmares while taking Elavil or amitriptyline. Especially in the beginning, or when stopping the med. Do you remember having the same reaction when you first started taking them?

It was one of the reasons that I stopped taking them myself. That and the fact that I was in this state of fogginess the next day. I just couldn't see taking a med that was supposed to be helping me sleep, but instead, was causing me to have nightmares and waking me up several times during the night.

I wasn't taking Oxycontin at the time, so for me, it wasn't that. I don't know how you are going about tapering, but if it's already a slow taper, then you may just need to "ride it out" till you are done.

Good luck with it. I'm sure it won't last too long, as your body starts adjusting to the decreased doses. Take care, CMP

Yes, I do have same scary dreams. I wake up in a middle of the room not knowing if this reality or still a dream.
Very wild dreams too!

I had it with Chantix - I don't know if it interacted with my AD and my PM med but it was a horrible 3 days and I will not take Chantix in my life again.

Intereting.

Ive always had really vivid dreams, in color, and can remember them clearly for days, weeks. Sights, smells, touch, ect. With pain meds they are quadruple the effect. Even if I nap during the day.

I had horrendous dreams while on Morphoine sulphate, when I would skip the night dose, no bad dreams. I also know if I take the upper dose of percocet, weird dremas as well, but the morphne dreams caused me to stop taking it. I would wake up thinking I was dying, and hyperventilating. I also had VIVID disturbing dreams. I got to th epoint I would sleep sitting up on my couch, as I was afraid to go in to my room and lay down. Good Luck!
