I had my period on May 10. Do I count 14 days after and have sex on the 14 day. I have read that you should start a few days before the 14 day. Is this right?

You start counting your cycle from the first day of your period. Some women ovulate on Cycle day fourteen, whereas some ovulate on day ten or eighteen....it just depends on the woman. After your period stops, it is a good idea to BD every day or every other day, until you feel you have ovulated.
Hope this helps.

Counting days is ok but it is better if you are charting your cycles as it will help you learn what to look for on impeding O and confirming O. Best thing to do is read the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility.

First thing you need to do is start charting your menstrual cycle. You need to buy a basal thermometer and start charting your temperature so you can determine when you ovulate. Some women ovulate early, some right on schedule and others later in the cycle. After a couple of months you should start seeing a pattern. If you know when you ovulate you increase the odds of becoming pregnant.
Also I would look on the internet for information about signs of ovulation. Vaginal secretions change closer to ovulation and what most of us have never paid attention to can be definite signs of impending ovulation if you know what to look for.
Basal thermometers are available in most drug stores, Target and department stores for around $10-$15.

I am getting really upset now because I got my period today and I am 9 days early. I had it on May 9 and now it is only 20 days. Last month it was 31, the month before that it was 30, and before that 26. Now I really do not know when I will be ovulating. I called my gyn and spoke to the nurse and she suggested that we have sex every day or every other day. She said the counting on the calendar will not work for me since I am all over the place with my period. I better start reading this book to get some answers.

The book is an easy read. I read it in a little over a day and that was including stopping and pointing out stuff for DH to read. I got a copy for my cousin and she finished it between her wedding planning and job hunting in about two days.
Stop counting the days unless you are taking your BBT. Stress is going to delay your O so that could be screwing things up as well.
So you need to read the book and start charting. By charting when you go see your dr you can show them the charts instead of just telling them that this cycle was this long and the one before that was this long and so on. With the charts they can see if your body is following it's normal pattern.
The sex every day or every other day wont hurt. That is how I got pregnant with my first ds. But then we had no issues then. With our second ds it was sex every other day while charting.

I just finished reading the book in 3 days. It answered alot of my questions about all of this. I am not sure if I will be using the chart though. Has anyone read this book and is going to use the chart?

I read the book and charted with my ds (15 months old) now ttc #2 and charting all fertility signs after mc 7 weeks ago. I hope to have a bfpt next week I'm 7 or 8 dpo now and can't wait. I love charting and find it unbelievable how reliable the CM and Temp are in determining o date. Baby dust to all.
