hello all. the other night i noticed a strange bump on my sternum. like an inch or less below where the collarbone connects to the upper sternum. it feels like a solid bone, and if i had to guess its been there my entire life. ive lost alittle weight lately so that might be why i noticed. im just alittle concerend about it is all. its not causing any real problems except mental ones. im almost 100 percent sure its a bone. is it possible its just mishaped or something and been like that since birth? or what else could it possibly be?

I checked the area on myself. It curves outward and is indeed a bone. By bump do you mean like a knot or a curve? If it is a curve, I am fairly sure it is normal.

i think its more of a knot. it feels like a bone sticking out alittle or something. its not really noticable if you look at it but you can feel it if you touch the area.

I just checked my books on anatomy and looked at the scapular/sternum area. From the illustration in there, it appears that the bone protrudes a bit (that curve that I feel on myself) and perhaps yours is just a little more pronounced?

Have you ever had a chest x-ray? If you have and nothing was ever said about it, I am pretty sure you are just fine.

i have never had a chest xray nor do i have health insurance. i have a history of being a hypochondriac however. im quite sure if i recently did something to cause the bone to protrude that i would be in quite a bit of pain. so the lack of pain makes me believe it has been there my entire life i just never noticed because i never looked for it.

does this seem like a big problem to anyone? or is it fairly normal to have some sort of imperfection like this.

seeing as no one is responding im going to go right the hell ahead and assume that it is no issue at all.

You know it could just be a case none of us know?
I have had 2 posts go un-answered so I took it as no one knew and left it as that which leaves me with the option of cough up more $$$ and go get it checked or leave it for a month and see if I'm stressed over nothing.
I am guessing these will be your options too. When in doubt check it out :)

yeah i suppose. but id rather not waste money on something that isnt going to hurt me in any way. i mean i highly doubt something like this could just magically happen overnight. my guess is its been there my whole life just never really noticed.

If your stressing over it get it checked. If it's nothing and you wasted money well it's not wasted at all if it ends the stress really. Your doctor will only do an x-ray if he/she thinks it's needed otherwise they will just have a feel and send you on your merry way if it's no concern.

i went to the doctors today and asked about the bump and the doctor thinks its a dislocated rib. but since im in no pain he told me its nothing to worry about.

She is gone now (the one who made that nasty post). I found a total of seven nasty posts in different topics last night that she made.

There are just some people who make trouble.

Glad you were able to find out what your knot was.

Hey, I ran into this message board through a search.

I have the exact same problem as specified. I hard bump on the sternum about an inch from the collarbone with no pain. Also lost weight lately, well 15 pounds or so and just noticed it. I am also a hypochondriac w/o health insurance.

After surfing the web throughout many healthboards and newsgroups most people say not to worry about it if it doesnt change in shape.

Glad to hear yours turned out to be a dislocated rib (possibly) i'll be happy with sticking to that diagnosis as well.

Luke
