After months of asking for a "scooter" we finally decided OK lets ask the Dr. Mom had her checkup today after her two weeks home from the hospital. She has talked about nothing else except this "scooter". She even tried one at AL where she lives. She loved it. She said how her life would be so much better with one. Why did we not see that she got one??? On and on. Get the picture? When she has something on her mind it won't go away!!!!! You all know how this obsession thing can drive you nuts????
After her checkup when it came to the questions we had about some things. The Dr. said "Now what can I do for you"? "Nothing" says Mom. I said "What about the scooter you want"? "I don't want a scooter. You girls want me to have one.:o But I think I should walk when I can. Its good for me". We know that. Its what we have been telling her for months. I ask my sister to check the back of my head!!!!! I think it blew off!!!!! We were speechless. I tried to explain but it just seemed useless at this point. So he says "Good, I guess we are done here".
Fast forward 5 hours. Mom called. "So did you girls get me set up with a scooter"???? God help us. Its funny when we talk about it. But I swear the "scooter" subject is going to be the death of me yet!!!!!! :(
Just another day with Mom. ARGGGGGG

we have tried to encourage my mom to use one, but not a chance, My daughter and I took my mom to wal-marts and they have them there, sooooo we told my mom to try one out, the speeds that she attained in the store had us running beside her, then she nearly tipped over as she sped around a corner and into a pile of paper towels..all I can say is thank god they don't have a horn...needless to say it will be some time before the "scooter" thing happens...

It's just as well she didn't want one while at the doctor's. Considering that they forget what a red light means, and forget how to use a toaster or a coffee maker, it would soon be too hard for her or even dangerous. If she brings it up again, just say ''we are working on it". One of those little white lies to save your and her nerves ...

Martha

I had to laugh and shake my head at both Chris and Jag's post. One thing you can say is that they make life... interesting! My mom has done the same thing Chris. Drive us crazy about something and then when the time comes to get it done she doesn't have a clue what we are talking about or wants something completely opposite. When you look back you find the humor but at the moment you really want to rip your hair out. Jag, I'm wondering if your Mom's middle name is Earnhart or Petty??? We considered a scooter for Dad because of his leg problems but figured out quickly that he was not mentally capable of handling it. Glad she ran into the paper towel bumper instead of something else.
Love, deb

Martha........We know she can't handle a "scooter". But we thought the Dr. would tell her again that she can walk a little and encourage her to do so. Your right about the coffee maker. She has a Bunn and can't operate the thing. I told my sister there was no way she would be able to operate, or learn, anything new. I think your right. It would be dangerous. Lord knows where she would end up..............knocking people over I'm sure.
I told Sis, just say we're working on it. She said "Your kidding? She'll buy that one"? Either that or get her one............NOT. So thats the plan.
Keep your fingers crossed for us. I know my Mom though. She'll be on the phone soon......................"Did you order my scooter"? My teeth are clinching. My jaw is sore. I love my Mom. I love my Mom. :D:D

Chris,
I don't know about your state, but in Minn. you have to pass a test to have a scooter. I didn't believe it, but my dad's doctor informed me that if Dad was going to have one full time and be out on the street with it, yes, he had to pass a test. So there you have your excuse. If your mom can pass a drivers test with the scooter,......

ibake....The scooter is for inside only. Mom never leaves AL facility unless she is with one of us. We have a wheel chair for shopping and such. Her apartment is one of the farthest away from the dining room. And the activity room. We took "first available" when she moved in there. Even at that she waited 5 months before she had a place.
Never once did we consider her safe enough to leave the grounds. Or safe enough on the grounds.:)
Chris
Maybe we are talking about two different things??? I meant a motorised wheelchair called a "scooter" I guess I should have said that in my previous post.

Haha. I have a little story about my Mom. While out in California for the winter months we were at the local Walmart. As we entered the store she made a beeline over to those motorized carts! She INSISTED she drive one as it would make her so happy to be DRIVING a vehile once again. She was like a litle kid, smiling, tooting the horn, trying to signal etc. She made it around the store a few times and then I told her that I would be right with her and BAM...I hear this loud noise and immediately I thought of her on that scooter! Yep, she managed to knock down the self=checkout counter and all of the bags! When I got to her she was laughing hysterically. She said"Well, Nance, I guess my driving says are over!". Thank God noone was hurt!

OMG Oceanside...that's so funny! I guess my DH and I always tried to find the humor in everything that happened whether it was something small or not. I think that kept us somewhat sane if that's possible! I remember the time we went to do our weekly food shopping and he went up to an elderly gentleman and starting talking to him and I knew he thought it was our neighbor who had actually passed away a year earlier and I just gently pulled him away and said, "I bet you thought that was Charlie didn't you" and he said yes. I just learned to go with the flow after awhile and just didn't care!
