I just want to know if anyone's tried BHT, and if/how it has helped. I am interested in trying this, and would like to know how much to take, where to buy, etc. I read (though am skeptical of course) that it eliminates the virus and antibodies from the body if taken long enough, but could be dangerous. It isn't even sold in health food or vitamin stores. Anyone who takes this or has taken it please tell your success/failure with it. THANKS!!

I bumped up and old thread with everything I know about BHT, it's also called 'BHT'. Remember, it isn't a natural substance, but a man made food preservative. Still, don't care who made it if it works, right? Since I became aware of BHT, I'm seeing it listed in the ingredients in alot of the things I eat, it's very common.

Since about 2 weeks after my first OB (genital HSV1) in early February, I have been taking the following daily: 1g Valtrex, 1000mg Lysine, and 250mg BHT. (The Valtrex started immediately, after I went to the doctor.) I added OLE about a month ago, starting with the liquid kind and then switching to capsules... I take 500mg at 12% a day. I may order my next batch off the internet, b/c 12% was the strongest I could find. I haven't tried oregano oil yet; in addition to the multivitamin and other stuff I take, I decided not to add more pills! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif But anyway, so far no more OB's. A couple of "maybes" with a razor-burn like feeling, but that's it. I'm using the bombard-and-hopefully-destroy method, and keeping my fingers crossed. After this first year is over, I'll re-evaluate. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

Anyway. I'm afraid to up the dosage of the BHT any, but so far I have experienced no negative side effects that I'm aware of, from any of these things.

I guess I missed that. Where do you get BHT?. I am still nervous to ingest a food perservative but I guess if you tried it, it can't be all that bad. How long have you been taking it for, how often, and when do you plan to stop Scaredgirl?.

I ordered it over the internet. I felt skeevy about it, but had looked in all the usual places and was unable to find it.

I guess I've been taking it for 3 months now. No side effects that I can see. I plan to do all these things for at least a year, evaluate with my doctor, and then go from there. I don't have a problem with taking Valtrex, as long as I have health insurance... but I sure wouldn't be opposed to going off it either, if the other stuff would keep the OBs away. But for the first year at least, I'm going to take everything. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

Be very careful with BHT. My husband and I were believers until we were poisoned by it last night. We accidentally took a higher quantity and became nauseous, almost threw up, had diarrhea, severe vertigo, disorientation, mental confusion, and both of us thought we weren't going to live through the night.

Just because BHT is FDA approved for some uses doesn't mean that it is healthy under any circumstance, even in the popular junk foods many Americans consume daily. The FDA is NOT our friend; rather they are a government entity sensitive to monies and lobbying from other sources. And the BHT you take for herpes is in much higher doses than received in your daily diet. I recommend sticking to Lysine, possibly Valtrex, and eating healthy to avoid breakouts.

Guys

I'm astounded at what I've just read in this thread. You cannot be serious!

Someone intends to try something because someone else said they'd tried it so it must be OK???

You are taking something which is still in the earliest stages of being a *possible* cure for herpes, but is still no more than that. And may well be toxic in doses large enough to affect the virus.

And to throw this, er, food preservative, into an already overloaded mix of prescribed and herbal medicine, which in themselves are quite strong, is crazy.

Even the one (obvious) site which seems to sell it is loaded with disclaimers and medical cautions.

And who knows who might be popping up on message boards promoting their stuff...?

And taking 'everything' is not a good idea, because if something does work, you won't know which is working, and which is not. Not to mention the possible harm it may cause.

Please look out for yourselves a bit more!

Hey guys, this is my first official post here. I showed first symptoms about 5 months or so. I researched a ton, and being a huge advocate of natural remedies and a very NON-FDA fan, I ran across BHT as a *possible* cure (yes, I know it's "man-made" and not herbal). I've been taking BHT (in conjuction with many other things) in hopes of ridding my body of this virus.

However, please do your own thorough research before putting ANYTHING in your body. It's your temple, and the only one you have, so be good to it. I've been taking BHT daily in 1000 mg doses for a good 4 months now. No side effects to speak of, but I'm in very good physical health aside from H.

At the very least, BHT may not be a cure, but it might likely help control the H by prohibiting it from replicating, similar to what the prescriptions tries to accomplish. Of course, your mileage may vary. Tread carefully and with caution. Good luck.

Having cold sores (HSV-1) since probably the age of one year old, I've experienced outbreaks at a frequency of 3 to 4, evenly spread out, per year. I am now 18 and have started looking for a method to keep it dormant. September of last year I began taking 1000 mg of lysine daily. I had an outbreak in about May of this year, so I figured I should add this BHT I've read so much about (1000 mg/day), and I started that in June. I had an outbreak 1 week ago (Friday) that has just started to clear up by today, and, surprise, another one right next to it appeared today. I'd say so far I've failed at my attempt to keep the virus dormant, and it seems conditions have worsened, probably only by chance and not as a result to my supplements; my body seems unresponsive so far. I plan on adding Hypercin (active ingredient in St. John's Wort) to the formula soon, in my desperate attempt.

That is my efficacy report of BHT; the reason why I am so concerned with cold sores is because I am a brass wind instrument player, and the condition literally jeopardizes my career.

First of all, you haven't 'failed' at anything! This virus is a tough one, there is as yet no known cure, and what works for some people just does not work for others.

If you're having 4 outbreaks a year and it keeps on at this rate, I wonder if it's necessary to keep up these prophylactic doses of stuff. Have you been to the doctor recently? Because I would have thought that having some acyclovir/valtrex in the house (and the other stuff) to take if you feel an attack coming on might be better?

Just my 2 cents... (I appreciate how frustrating this must be, given what you do for a living).

I'm allergic to many things, including those medications. I cannot take acyclovir orally, only topically, which provides little help.

It's frustrating and disappointing at the same time, because if I have a concert and I can't play my horn, there's nothing I can do.

Sorry to hear this, ap. Are you allergic to Famvir too? (I haven't heard of this before...)

You could try Oil of Oregano and Olive Leaf Extract, which seem to have worked for some, as reported here. I am still in the experimental stage with OOO, and am saving the OLE for if the OOO does not work. That said, I'm still on the Valrex too.

Sounds like you maybe don't drink much or smoke? Or I'd say try stopping those, and coffee too. Then it's back to that good ole fundamental, stress, Which always brings on an OB for me. :-(

Keep trying - the world needs (and loves) musicians!
