Ok my doctor gave me the Acyclovir to see if it will be just as effective as the valtrex in treating me everyday...well im still in breakout #2..its been almost 6 weeks now...is this normal for breakouts? It just appears to me that this medicine isnt helping me at all..For those of you taking the valtrex how were u feeling better? im just wondering if i should just shell out the money and get on valtrex...

Hi Dreamer,

You've been on Acyclovir for 6 weeks and there's been no change in the OB? Or you were on Valtrex and then changed to Acyclovir? If you were on Valtrex before, do you think your OB healed faster or was less severe? It might be hard to compare and tell, if this is only your second OB. 6 weeks sounds like a long time (too long) to go with no changes to the OB, if you're on antivirals.

You might try Famvir instead or go back on the Valtrex. I've personally found I get better results with Valtrex, but I've heard of people who get better results with Acyclovir! Go figure. Everyone is a little different.

Hi Oneforall!
Quick question, since you have been on Valtrex, how many OBs have you had and how often do they come? I am considering getting on Valtrex and I am curious to know if it has proven effective for others (taking into consideration that everyone's body is different).

HI Camille,

My OBs are reduce to virtually zip when I'm on Valtrex, under ordinary conditions. I get extremely stubborn OBs when I take SAMe for depression and I've found that even high doses of Valtrex won't stop them http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif so I don't take the SAMe very often (only when I really need to break out of a rut). But besides that, I've had great success with the Valtrex. I've also had a lot of success with generic Acyclovir which is usually cheaper, although somehow I "felt" more stable on the Valtrex. Imagination maybe; dunno.

Hope that helps!
