View Full Version : Psychiatrist passed away. Records?

Hello,

I went to a Psychiatrist about 5 or 6 years ago, because I was having trouble telling my parents about my sexuality etc etc. I went there about 3 times, mostly talked about why it made me nervous.

Here I am a few years later, I'm applying for a new job and on the medical history form I had to indicate that I have seen a mental health professional in the past (Federal job).

Unfortunately, the Psychiatrist passed away last year (old age).

HR for the agency is requesting that I be evaluated by a mental health professional (this is the easy part) but they also want copies of my records from the Psychiatrist I was seen by in 2002.

His office number is disconnected, he owned his own practice- is it possible to get these records? How? I have no real way to getting in touch with his office, since he WAS the office.

If anyone can give me any advice I would appreciate it. I plan on contacting HR and explaining the situation but thought it prudent to do a little research on my own first.

Thanks in advance....

Hello Hudson,

Explain the situation to them; you have done all that can be expected of you.
I cannot see how this can be held against you.

Take care.

I wonder what kind of job you are applying for. Do you really want to turn over your medical records to a potential employer. It's good to be honest but why do they need these.

Is this a fitness for duty pre employment physical? I'd be careful about turning over protected health information.

If the doctor only saw you in his private office/business and there's no one taking over the practice then it seems like it's impossible to find those medical records.

Why do they need to look at your files? If they are going to send you to a PDOC for an evaluation then I would tell them that should be sufficiant.

I personally think there is something wrong with what they are asking.
