I've had diagnosed reflux for years. Still follow the reflux diet for the most part. My symptoms were some burping and a chronic cough, never heartburn. I had an Endoscopy, Manometry and 24hr Ph a couple years ago. I started off with Prilosec and Protonix. They didn't do much. A the tests a bit over 2 years ago, I went on Prevacid 2x/day. My symptoms improved drastically almost immediately. I have maintained the diet and Prevacid routine thinking I had the acid under control because I had no apparent symptoms.
Several weeks ago, I went in for some testing regarding my asthma. Two of the tests were the Modified Barium Swallow and an Esophagram. Evidently they showed that I have a lot food and acid coming back up still. The acid is aggrevating my asthma.
My GI doc took me off of the Prevacid and put me on Nexium Thursday. (Gave me samples, it isn't covered by my insurance.) The last two days I have had some heartburn and alot of belching. In all my years with reflux, heartburn has never been my problem. Also, I haven't belched like this for several years. How long should I give my body to adapt to the Nexium? I'm not sure I can handle this until my appointment in a month. Also, I worry about the worsening reflux triggering my asthma. Should I try to get back in to the doc sooner? He said that if this doesn't work I might be looking at needing some surgery. I need to find something to help with my asthma. This winter was extremely rough for me.

I don't know I was on Nexium for 3 months & they didn't work at all for me, plus I had terrible nightmares while on it - don't know if they were the cause, but they stopped when I went off. I use Protonix, but even that took 3 or 4 weeks before it started working.
