Has anyone experienced a metallic taste and mouth burning from using HCTZ 25 mg. each day? I do not see it listed as a side effect but I am curious to find out before switching to another medication for control of HBP. I am also taking protonix 40 mg. every other day but that does not list it as a side effect either. Those are the only two drugs that I take. I do take Centrum Silver, one every day and Vit. D 1,000 mg. every day for a low Vit. D level but neither of these list what I am experiencing as a side effect. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

I have read that HCTZ can cause a metallic taste. <removed>

Paddy,
the metallic taste in the mouth is a common side effect. You are right, it is often not listed as such, probably because it is quite harmless. I had the same problem - not too sure which one(s) of my meds was responsible for it. It could have been the PPIs, or the Hctz, or both. I remember I came across some information about it in one of my drug books. The metallic taste was actually listed as a side effect of a specific drug. Unfortunately, I don't remember which one.
You will find that the drug info sheets supplied with the drugs by the pharmacy contain only the most basic information. A lot is left out. Package inserts are better in that respect. Unfortunately, they are not supplied to consumers here. It always pays to inform yourself as best you can. Armed with knowledge, you can anticipate some of the side effects, and recognize them as such.
If it bothers you that much, switch to another medication. The metallic taste has either gone away, or else I've grown used to it and don't even notice it anymore.

Paddy,
A metallic taste in the mouth is one symptom of a vitamin D overdose...based on what I've read, vitamin d can build up in body and can become toxic...if this should occur, it can cause permanent damage to your kidneys, heart, or lungs.
When you take a diuretic, or any medication for that matter, it may alter the way the body processes vitamins, foods, otcs, and other meds. The kidneys and liver sometimes must work harder to get rid of the toxins that are created by these things. Sometimes these organs get overloaded and we end up with an "overdose".
I would suggest you contact your pharmacist, the drug company, and your doctor about your reaction. Do some reading...and don't rely on any one source...your health is too important and health care professionals make mistakes....lots of them!
