This past weekend I was placed on Metoprolol 100 MG tablets (Two 50 MG tablets) twice daily. My first dose was Firday night, 6/6/08. Again I took the correct dose on Saturday morning. By Saturday afternoon I was dizzy and feeling like crap. I have a pill spliter so Saturday night I cut a pill in half and took one 50 MG and 25 MG (half) for a total of 75 MG. I didn't feel as badly as when I took the full dosage.

I know I'm not supposed to stop this medication cold turkey so I was wondering since I had only taken the full dose for such a short period then reduced it....should this be relatively safe? Eventually I would like to get down to 50 MG twice a day.

Have you been checking your bp on a regular basis over the weekend? I would make sure your numbers are good.

Probably, your best bet would be to contact your doctor since this seems to be a new med for you.

Good luck

My BP has been fine with the reduction.

It wouldn't hurt to check with your Dr. but probably you will be fine. Dr's should start with the lowest dose & work up until one's b/p is at the reasonable level. Sometimes one can tolerate a medicine better by allowing one's body to adjust to it. I've done most of my meds this way in spite of the DR's objections. They want to get a good number to write in the chart as fast as possible.

Sometimes with very high b/p one has to start with a higher dose.

I bought two medical textbooks on Hypertension & it says to start low & go slow. Maybe some of our Dr's were sleeping through that class. :) Fam

The doctor realized the original dose was too much. I was told I did the right thing by reducing the meds as soon as I realized what was happening. I have been told to do HALF the original priscription by taking one 50 mg tablet twice daily.

Glad you caught that error. Dr's can make mistakes too so we have to be vigilant with our health & question anything that seems incorrect. Fam
