My mother was diagnosed with Stage IV NSCLC in October of 2007. The first doctor she saw gave her just a couple of weeks to live. She got a second opinion and her new doctor started her on chemo. It took several rounds of chemo to find chemo agents that didn't have side effects she couldn't tolerate. Taxol did not work for her--severe leg pain. PET scan results after chemo have shown shrinkage of cancerous lesions and no advancement of the cancer. She is on a two month break from chemo due to weakened immune system and she only has one kidney. About two weeks ago, I took her to New York City for 5 days to see the Statue of Liberty (something she has always wanted to do). She was able to be a tourist from 8am to 10pm everyday.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Thank you for replying and sharing. I hate to hear that it took your mother several atempts to get on track. My doctor knew from the first visit his plan of treatment....very confident, made me feel like I will live with this for a long time. I am so glad you got to spend time away with your mother, what a trip. Hopefully there will be many more specail moments, trips and times. And from the way it sounds the disease didn't get in the way from a great time! From what I gather your mother is doing well. I can remember a trip with my mother like that, however she suddenly passed 3 days later of an Asthma attach. I can tell you that my chemo(4 cycles) kicked my butt, I just finished my 4th so I am looking forward to my body to get to heal. I noticed in the past week that I have been having some pain in my hips and thighs and it has me a little concerned. This far I have responded to the chemo, and my Dr. feels very good about where I'm at with this. This is such a humbling experience.... Your mother and I sound to be in about the same situation. What she was told is where I am at, however I only had 4 clycles of chemo, I am now on a maintenance plan every 3 weeks of Avastin and Entrastrourin. I feel that I and hopefully your mother will get a good time laspe. Looking at your location I had to wonder if you were my daughter, but your description of your mother was not me. If you don't mind me asking how old is your mother? I hope your mother well, and you and your mother will be in my prayers, thoughts and concerns.

I look forward to hearing from you.

My mother is 64. She will be going in for blood work and another PET scan in about 2 weeks. We are keeping our fingers crossed that nothing has grown or spread. Her weight loss has stabilized which seems to be a good sign, I think she gained 5lbs on our trip to New York City.

Thanks Kjonesin. I will keep my fingers crossed and keep you and your family in my prayers. I do think your mother and I responded a little different, and rightfully so, cancer, side effects, and chemo are unique to each individual. I am 49, and kept my weight. Keep me posted, and if I can do anything let me know.
