Hi All

Again i ask for your help, advice, reasuurance etc.

For the last few weeks i have experienced what i call sleep jumps, as i am drifting off to sleep or asleep ( well as much as a deep sleep we fibro's can have) I jump, it actually feels as though my heart turns over, i violently jump and then go on to shake inside for ages, meaning i am unable to drop back off to sleep. I have now got to a point that i am waiting for it to happen each night which stops me falling to sleep or brings one of these bloody things on, i cannot stand it. I am unable to sleep in the same bed as my husband as i keep him awake each night.

Any ideas? Anyone else have this? Anyone knows how to stop it? Its scary and feels awful, i need to sleep!!!!!!!

Hi Kazaam:

What you describe must be very annoying! I have some thoughts about what this might be, but I'm no expert. The heart pounding/internal shaking thing almost sounds like a hypoglycemia attack (a common FMS trait). Are you eating refined carbs or sweet stuff before bed? Another thought is you should see a sleep expert. You may have something going on in sleep cycles that causes you to jerk awake like that. I really feel for you.

Blessings,
Kirstee

It happens to me every once in a blue moon. But if it's happening on a regular basis you should probably see a sleep specialist and maybe have a sleep study done.

I have these everynight. My arms and legs jump, and jerk. I also once I fall asleep, feel like I am falling, and wake up scared. It usually happens everynight, but the arms and legs jerking is something that happens often, 2-4 times per night.

I noticed this the first time I was in hospital after my c-section everytime I closed my eyes I felt I was falling or waking with this huge jerk/jump. Mentioned it to my sister, didnt think anymore of it, Had them again and again and they really hurt my back before my fusion so I used to dread it, but then after my fusion it didnt cause pain in my back. But I have them more and more often... One afternoon I was lying on the bed and I counted about 10 of them in a very short space of time. I was blaming the oxycontin that I am on now, but years ago when they started I wasnt on anything. But in the last number of months I have several of them everytime I lye down, more so during the day. Actually I find them quite annoying now as I wake up with a jump, or my foot goes for a jump, or my arm........ it is like you have no control of which part of you will do it next. I was told I had F.M. but my doctor doesnt believe it, and is thinking along the lines of A.S. but that is still to be checked out. Is this a symtom of F.M.? or just the meds?

My husband has that. His sleep doctor called it "Sleep Starts". Go to a search engine, look it up, and see if it fits.

i have had fibro for many yrs now and have never heard of this being related. it has happened to me before but not on a regular basis. i always thought it was probably related to a dream. if you get this all the time, you definitely need to be checked out...meds could very well cause this, also.

hope you get some answers soon....it sounds terrible to me to be going thru that on a regular basis...take care, bevann

Your right, bevann. I do not think it is fibro related (although everything else is). My husband has complex sleep apnea but I don't necessarily think it is related to that either. You should definately tell your doc about it.

I have these. I used to have them really bad before I started taking Trazodone. Now I just get them every once in a while when I am hurting really bad and trying to fall asleep. It definitely has something to do with some stage in the sleep cycle. Mine always happen right when I'm almost completely out.
