Does anyone know about the 24 hour ph probe readings? I'm wearing mine right now. The technician said that anything between 5 and 8 is considered normal. What does it mean if you see a reading lower than 5? Does that mean you have too little acid, or too much?

My ENT explained to me that anything less than 4 means that acid is high.
But then again it all depends on how long it stays on 4 or lower.

Thanks for your reply. My probe went in at 10:30 and now, almost 6 hours later, my average reading has been about 6 to 7. I've had a few times where it went to 2.0 or so, but it only stayed there for a few minutes. It will be interesting to see what it reads when I lay down to go to sleep. I'm wondering if all my symptoms are due to night time reflux. It's pretty neat how this little machine can measure this!

I am due to have it done on 02July, but I am dreading it since I have to be off meds, and being on 80mg of nexium and still getting stomach burnings have no idea how I am going to feel.

Does the tube feel uncomfortable, or do you get used to it?

The tube for the 24 pH probe isn't too bad. It's pretty thin. You can feel it only when you swallow but I would say it's mildly uncomfortable, not horribly so. I do find as the day goes on, you get more used to it. I had the manometry test done earlier today, prior to the 24 probe. I found that one much more uncomfortable. The tube is much thicker. That test is supposed to measure how the muscles in your esophagus work, and how your LES valves are working. It also aids in the proper placement of the 24 pH probe. The manometry only took about 15 minutes, so it was bearable. I wouldn't have wanted to be sent home with that tube though.
I was lucky in that being off the meds didn't make my symptoms worse so that part was easy for me. (Guess mabye I'm not on the right meds or not being treated for the right condition!) I hope you do ok, being off your meds before your test. Did your doctor talk to you about wearning yourself off, instead of stopping all at once? I would think that might make things easier.
Good luck!

Thanks for the info on PH-metry test. Right now my stomach feels like it's on fire, hate this, just want to feel normal, but it just seems to get worst.

Hope your PH-metry went well, Good luck with the results
