I don't think you have much to worry about.
Here is what happened to me:
They will first spray something for you to swallow which will make your throat numb. Doesn't hurt, just a strange feeling. Then, they gave me some medication which made me forget everything (vercid?). Next thing I knew I was waking up.
I think the procedure only takes about 15 minutes.
Not a bad procedure at all - don't worry.

I didn't have any throat spray. Just sedation via IV that doesn't put you to sleep, but you are out enough that you don't remember what happened. I just remember getting hooked up to the IV, rolling over, and next thing I remember was getting rolled out of the exam room.
Though, the medicine makes you a little loopy. I wasn't the same for the rest of the day, and only vaguely remember some of the things (like talking to the GI after).

Why would they give lidocaine and epinephrine???? I am really stressed now because I have bad reactions from epinephrine. I thought they gave you a throat spray and sedation. The nurse has me freaked out why would they give a lidocaine epinephrine shot???

I had an endoscopy where they went through the nose. All he did was spray the numbing agent into my nose/back of my throat. If I remember correctly, I saw the label, and I believe it said lidocaine/epinephrine on it.
Do people just need the sedation if they go through the mouth. Mine through the nose was a little uncomfortable, but not painful.

Are you able to drive yourself home after a procedure like this?

Depends. If they sedate you, no.

That is great - I am glad it went well. Mine is scheduled for 8/1 and I am nervous but SO want to find out what is happening in there.
My secret fear is that they will say everything is ok.... I know that might sound funny - but I have been having serious non-stop reflux for almost three months -with MINIMAL help from daily medication (Prevacid and carafate, and a strong Probiotic) - and also strict diet.
I have had over 14 different blood tests and an ultra sound and so far nothing... How can you suffer SO BAD and it be nothing???? My hope is the scope will show the cause and they can fix me.....
I am only 34 and want to be able to eat chocolate and drink coffee again - at least every once in a while.
What were you results? Did they give new medications?
Vanessa

Hi Vanessa and all! I am right there with you. I thought I licked this thing with one box of prilosec. ha! Think again... it didn't work. Now I have reflux everyday. Some days are worse than others. I watch everything that goes in my mouth. I haven't had any chocolate or coffee for awhile now. I am so mad about this. I don't know how long to give it before I ask the doctor to send me to a specialist to go in there and look. UGH!

Right there with you too, Vanessa. And I know exactly what you mean. I'm 32, and I had an endoscopy earlier this year. They found nothing other than some "roughening" of my esophagus. They were like "this is great" which I guess yes is better than cancer or something. Meanwhile, I'm still having problems, and they have no idea why or what to do about it... :(
So anyway, they may not find anything, but if not, I guess just be thankful that it's not worse. At least that's what I try to tell myself. :D
