Hi all Msers,

Anyone among you has any swallowing issues?
How did it began? How do you deal with it?

I don't notice it, but I was diagnosed before MS with abnormal swallowing by my dentist.

It doesn't interfere in any way with anything :)

Hi, there

I've had this on and off. About 4years ago my tongue went numb and has never completely woke up. I have problems swallowing at times when tongue is very numb. Choking on food and drinks. At times will develop a masculine voice***and I am not a man*** But, that as well comes and goes. I try to chew my food very carefully before I try the swallowing process. Maybe that might help.. MS is a horrible word. For me it means Multiple Symtoms. And many times no doctor is able to really give you an answer.

Hi John.

I just got the Ms Magazine in the mail today. There was a article on swallowing issues. Just went to grab it. The proper name for swallowing difficutlies is known as "Dysphagia"
MS can cause Dysphagia if theres damage to the connections between the brain & the spinal cord. Affecting muscles used in swallowing.
It can happen anytime a& last for any amount of time. More so during a relapse which disappear as they recover.
Which is what happened to me. thats why i looked at this atricle. for me it was personal interest. My swallowing issues have now passed. The heat, stress or anxiety can also cause this. too.

You can also get a copy of a booklet fronm your MS Society. They have free books that they can send out to you. Hope i helped a little.

Hope your feeling better.

I started having my swallowing issues about 8 month ago. I also chocke on food and drinks; my voice also getting very low, seems like I am having a cold, but I don't.

I can understand how you feel; we are in same boat in it.

Best of luck to you!

Hi all Msers,

My swallowing issues started when the food went down and did a u-turn....:(
It continued to even affect my saliva while sleeping. I now sleep on an incline and it helps a lot!

As to the eating....I drink ice cold water which helps open my throat up (it feels open!). I also avoid foods that trigger swallowing problems continually. On the really bad times a blender is necessary for me to eat.
