Haven't been posting lately, but just wanted you guys to know that Topamax has been a MIRACLEdrug for me. I have been on it now for approximately 1 1/2 months and my pain has practically diminished entirely. I had been on so many drugs with no relief that I had almost given up hope. I started Topamax at 25mg and gradually increased it. I am now at 100 mg once a day. At first I was tired and sort of brain foggy but that all went away within a short period of time. I now can do things I never thought I could ever do again. Like get up at 5 AM and walk my dog around the block without dying. LOL. Please, if you have never given it a try.....consider it or at least speak with your doctor about it. I also have degenerative disc disease in my neck and my neurosurgeon is the one who suggested it. Fortunately, I don't need surgery yet, but Topamax has also helped that pain, too. Which is also a miracle in itself. Good luck to you all. I have also been able to stop Prozac which I had been on for years, and I have also been able to stop Flexeril. The only pain med I take now is an occasional Aleve or ibuprofen. So glad to hear the Topamax is working for you. I also took it for quite some time, about a year, and it was helpful for most of that period. However, I never did lose the "dopey" effects--short term memory loss, inablilty at times to put words together, and difficulties driving, especially at night. It was very helpful for my FM pain and I even lost weight on it at the beginning (which was a good thing), but I eventually developed some depression/anger episodes, which went away once I discontinued the Topamax.
In addition to my FM, I also have nerve pain from disk problems, and after striking out with Lyrica, also due to side effects, I am now on Neurontin. It also has made me sleepy during the day, but no memory or cognitive issues, so far at least. It has helped with the nerve pain a great deal.
