I take 50 mg of Metoprolol twice daily and a 5/20 mg Lotrel once daily for high blood pressure, which has been consistently under control. I also take .5 mg of Clonazepam twice daily for Panic Disorder. My sleep is horrible. I wake up every night, usually about 2 or 3 a.m. and usually a couple of times between that time and about 7 a.m. Even while I am sleeping, it is never restful sleep. I have very vivid, strange dreams all night long. Not really nightmares, but just strange, sometimes unsettling. I have read that Metoprolol can cause this type of thing, but when I asked my GP about it, he said it was more likely the Clonazepam (a form of benzodiazepine). I think my GP is wrong. I think it is either the Metoprolol or maybe panic symptoms during the night (sometimes I wake up with my heart racing). Either way, these unrestful sleep patterns are starting to get to me. Any ideas? Thanks.

I take labetalol which is a alpha/beta blocker. I've haven't had much with dreaming with this drug until recently when I started taking my last dose before bed. Now I get very intense dreaming in which there is always some event or situation that requires a lot of drama etc.-not really nightmares & nothing bad happens. I would prefer a nice peaceful dream, however. I'll probably put up with it because I like my new med schedule much better because it lessens the daytime fatigue factor.
When I was on Inderal which is a pure beta blocker my dreams were a lot worse.
I do feel rested when I wake up which my sleep Dr. says is the criteria to evaluate the situation. Fam

Hi,
I had major sleep issues while I was on metoprolol. I felt "wired" and would just lie awake. It was awful.
I don't think there are any beta blockers that do not cause insomnia and/or sleep disturbances.
What is your routine, Fam, with the labetalol? It seems to work for you and at least let you sleep.

I had major problems with that drug also. I am no longer on it because I do have a dr. that does listen to me. I could hardly sleep and I would go into these attacks that are a little hard to explain but by the time they were over my blood pressure would be up and my head would be sore and hurting so bad.

I am on this now and it knocks me out, I can barely get up in the morning. However, I do have vivid dreams and I even wake in the middle of the night feeling like I cannot breathe.
