Hi all,
I just spent about an hour writing a detailed message to update everyone on my situation. Then, my computer shut down.
I have some specific questions, but wanted to give some background so you could better help with the question. Anyway, I don't have what it takes to re-type the whole message.
I'll just spit out the question and explain from there if I need to.
I was in the hospital for six days and was given IV Steriods for MS relapse. The last two days in the hospital were Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. The nurse noted an unusual heart rate of 50 on two occasions. Those last two nights in the hospital, I would literally wake myself up just taking in a very deep breath. The breath would be so deep, it would wake me from sleep. Of course, now I wonder if the low heart rate and the deep breaths were related. I would imagine so.
Anyway, the released me, so they must not have thought too much about it. I never reported to them the deep breaths.
Wednesday night of this week was my first night home from the hospital. I noticed the deep breaths continuing. I felt it might me the muscle relaxant they had me on, so I stopped taking it. I was lightheaded all day yesterday, and had a heaviness in my chest and all over my head and ears. Sort of like being in a pressure tunnel, but with pain involved. I found it hard to concentrate, and spoke outloud to myself.
At 10:00 last night, I took Hydrocodone. The deep breaths started almost immediately. I timed them, and my body was requiring a deep breath about every 3 1/2 minutes. I researched this pain reliever and found that it can cause such breathing problems associated with death, especially when taken with a muscle relaxer. That scared me, even though I had taken it less than the doctor had even prescribed.
I stayed up all night, not wanting to fall asleep and stop breathing. Through the night, my body was requiring these breaths every 1-3 minutes. I felt certain that once the medication wore off, the side effects would stop. That hasn't happened all day. I am still having deep breaths, and my chest is now feeling heavy with a little pain. I still feel lightheaded and there is pressure in my head and ears.
I know you all are going to say to call the doctor, and I promise I will. I just don't want to have to worry my family again, especially if there is no need. Do any of you have any suggestions for what is going on?
Thanks in advance,
Lavonna

Lav! I was just thinking this week, "Vonnag has not posted in a while, I hope they're doing alright!".
Very sorry to hear about the relapse. I do hope you feel better once the steroids have ceased and are out of your system.
I haven't experienced this myself, but I wanted to say hi to a familiar face :)

Hi Nenu,
Good to hear from you.
I just called the doctor, and they said to come to the urgent care clinic. I knew this is what they would say.
I am so sick of the doctors offices and hospitals right now!
I want to at least wait till my husband gets off work so he doesn't have to rush home all worried.
By the way, my skin feels clammy too. I think this is related to the heart somehow.
I am anxious to hear from any of you with insight.

I understand your wanting to wait for your husband to come safely home. I'm glad you're connected here ... but want you to have a telephone with 911 on speed dial next to you. Just in case it is somethng heart related. Your described symptoms are worrisome. sending prayers:angel:

Hi,
I am recently New to the healthboard. Angeles is my name. I have experienced unusual heart rate of 50 or so. At times very difficult for the nurses to find one. Which is scary. I usually have to take very deep breaths as if an elephant is sitting on my chest/painful. I think you are correct about the meds and especially the steroids. You will also experience a metal taste in your mouth after that long hospital stay with steroids. That has happened about 4 times to me right after the solu-medrol steroids. About the pressure tunnel head and ears. I feel i have an orquestra playing 24/7 horrible feeling. No doctor has had an answer for me. It's hard not having an answer to what is happening to your body. I tell myself MS stands for Multiple symtoms with no answers. Hope you get better soon. Just try to take it as easy as you can. My last relapse was in Dec 3. 2007 and it took me 5mos to get back to work. It was the worst relapse ever. But, i am up on my feet and full of symtoms But happy to be up.... MS will not keep me down
take care

Pens n Chalk, Yes, I have a phone beside me. Also, my four children are here. Three of them are in their teens, so they can easily help if need be. I do appreciate your prayers!
Angels, your message helped a lot. To hear that you had similar symptoms is very helpful. Believe it or not, your message almost made me cry. I think partly because I am very emotional and want to be well, and partly because without the pain medications, the pain is coming back with a vengance. I will get through this, but appreciate the encouragement.

Oh my god this sounds so familiar. Pain with a vengance. It's horrible when it get's out of control. I have pain on a daily basis and now see that I am not the only one that actually sleep w/phone next to me in case i have to call 911. And it has also been because I feel one day I will have a stroke. I will pray that you will get some answers and help from the doctors today. Stay positive. I feel your pain and frustration.

Hi there, I am new too. I just wanted to let you know that when I had the intervenus steroids I had similar symptoms as Angeles as well. But it was mostly my blood pressure that dropped significantly. Very light-headed, feels like pressure on chest and around your head. I don't think mine were as severe as yours sound like they are. It would probably have a lot to do with your others meds as well like you said. Anyway, I just wanted to send my best. Get well and be safe. And remember, This too shall pass. :)

Smashly, thats my favorite saying in the whole world! This too, shall pass is posted on just about everything I own! LOL. I do think that steroids are the culprit of most of this type of symtom....it should regulate when the IV is over..
good luck, Vonnag- we are all routing for you, let us know how youre feeling in a day or so.
Hugs
Nikki
