Hi,
I'm just wondering if anyone can offer some advice or maybe they've experienced the same thing.
I'm 31 and lost all of my teeth due to a severe lack of bone in my upper and lower jaws. I've been told that I have the jaw bones of a 70 year old.The teeth were healthy enough, but when I was 8 I was diagnosed with advanced peridontal disease (they never diagnosed the severe bone loss at that stage) and ever since then it was the long road to losing them.
Now I'm trying to get fitted for dentures, but because of the severe bone loss, it seems that I won't be able to wear them and I am devastated. I have started taking calcium, vitamin D and strontium supplements to help and am using a waterpik to clean and massage my gums with a hebal tooth and gum formula and I'm trying to research treatment for bone loss.
I've discovered a process called distraction osteogenesis and my main questions are: 1. Has anyone had this treatment or know about it or has anyone had major bone grafting done and 2. Has anyone else used these supplements for bone loss and had success???
I've been told that what I have is quite rare and that an OS could go his whole career without ever seeing a case like this and I think its because its so rare that they are reluctant to treat me.
Any relevant info would really really be appreciated. I'm sorry about the long post, but this really is the short version :D

I'm really sorry to hear this. I can imagine how you feel with not being able to even wear dentures. I haven't heard of that process but just wanted to say that I hope there is some treatment for you so you are able not only to eat but to have a smile. Let us know how this goes.

I'm sorry to hear this also. My first thought though is it this bone loss only in your jaw?. I think you should be ckecked all over first. It may be a parathyroid problem or some other medical problem?

I am sorry you are dealing with this and you are so young. I don't really have any experience with severe bone loss but I want to encourage you. With medical technology improving each year I hope there will be a treatment that will help you in the near future. My prayers are with you Daisy.:angel:

Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers ... it really means alot ...

Thanks for bringing that up ... my OS has kind of talked around it and made off the cuff remarks about it but am scheduling an appointment with my doctor after his remark that I'm 'a prime candidate for osteoporosis and what not!!!' Fingers crossed I get to the root of this problem once and for all :) Will keep posting with any updates I get .... CT scans etc are booked for 17 July so have a bit of a wait yet.

Althought it might be costly, did you inquire about bone grafting? They use either cadavar bone (I believe this is safe, althought it is the bone from a deceased person and it sounds awful, I think it is safe) or they take bone from your own hip (which is a second surgery). They can build up the bone in your mouth and therefore you will be able to wear dentures.

Thank you so much .... they made a vague comment that they wouldn't harvest bone from my hip because I probably have a problem with my bones 'overall' .... I have heard about the use of cadaver bone and would not have a problem with it .... I also know that they can use bone that has been 'grown' in a lab .... but the more I'm getting the feeling that they are quite conservative with my treatment .... I think they are a bit scared because they have never encountered it before!!! Every suggestion I make is shot down ... oh well, back for more CT scans etc on 17 July, so will have more info then and will post.

Hi, I have no lower back teeth. I have worn a lower partial for years but because of bone deteriation am no longer able to wear them. i am having the entire lower jawbone rebuilt. They are using a cadaver bone. I am really scared to have the surgery. I will be without lower teeth for a total of 8 months and that's if all goes well.
Surgery is July 7th. I am really nervous so every one keep me in your thoughts. Good luck Daisydoo.

i'm not sure whether this would be right for you ,but take a look at mini implants.
they are fitted even with no bone structure ,but whether it is suitable for your condition?
but its worth looking into i do hope you can get sorted and keep smiling

I have severe bone loss in both jaws, too - lost all my teeth at 30, too.
I went to all the dentists in town, who said they couldn't do anything. Then I found a prosthedontic specialist in a nearby town, who was actually able to fit me.
I also had some implants. Again, the other dentists said I had too little bone, but the surgeon I ended up going to indeed got two of them in.
Have you consulted a really good specialist in prosthedontics? I just hope you can - I'd lost hope, too. But I really can chew pretty well now, and have full uppers and lowers.
It's very expensive, and I"m on SSI, but found the funding to get it done, anyway.

You are like my light at the end of a tunnel :) Everyone has been so kind and given me a lot of support, but when someone has gone through the same thing at the same age you know exactly what it is like and to hear that you have had success with your surgeon gives me a little hope :)
I'm currently going between two max fac consultants and a restorative dentristy consultant .... my main priority now is just to get dentures and see how I do with them. I'm on the waiting list to see the other consultant, who is a lot more optimistic than the one I am dealing with now .... Did you find that they were scared to treat you cause they didn't really understand what was going on? thats how I feel ....
I know its going to be expensive, but I'll find the money somewhere .... for this I would willingly go into debt LOL... I will keep posting with my progress and thanks for the support .... like i say, you've given me hope.
