doc has me starting to wear my sneaker inside the house starting next tuesday. (still wants me to wear the boot outdoors)
He wants me to wear the dressing with "sticky tape". But do I put a sock on top of that? go w/out a sock?
and how does it feel to go to a bendable bottom after wearing the boot (surgical shoe) for 5wks?

I would go with wearing a sock (extra bit of padding). What is sticky tape?

I just started wearing tennis shoe on my surgery foot this past week and can tell you first and foremost - don't go overboard wearing the shoe for a whole day and walking too much. I did that my first day and had more pain and swelling. I've learned to up the amount of time each day I wear it by just a bit. I'm still wearing my boot about half the day and tennis shoe the rest. I do wear socks as it provides a bit of added protection and padding. Most of my steri-strips have fallen off but I am still covering the incision site on the bottom of my foot with band-aids just to add a little extra protection to an already tender area.

I have noticed that my leg is extremely weak when not in the boot so watch out for that (my calf and knee feel very weak and my knee feels like it is gonna buckle every once in a while). And you were off your foot and in a cast/boot longer than I was, so be careful with those first steps. Take baby steps.

Good luck and keep me updated how your foot feels. I'm kinda curious how your transition goes compared to what mine is like.

my wife broke her ankle in 4 places and has 2 plates and 9 screws. She went form the boot to a shoe called skechers. She could adjust the size to the fit her broken ankle and still be able to wear the same kind of shoe on the other foot.

Dingles & Itsanewme:

What kind of surgery did you have? I had morton neuroma surgery on left foot and hammertoe surgery on right 3 weeks ago. I started out with boots on both feet and now I have a boot on the left and shoe on the right. I imagine I will be in them for at least 2 or 3 more weeks.

I will be glad to get back into sneakers, but I too am concerned as to how my feet will take to wearing shoes again. I don't want to get into them before my feet are completely healed and strong.

Stretch your calf/achilles' tendon. It could be kinda stiff.

You may want to ask your doc for a script for a Spring Lite Insert. It is a very thin, rigid insert you can put in the operated foot's shoe. It keeps the sole from bending too much. It is a good transition. I had to use one for a stress fracture right after coming out of the post op sandal.

the doc wants me to use a sticky type ace bandage - sticks onto itself, no need to velcor or the pins. Im wondering how the wrap will fit inside the sneaker, along with a swollen foot and then a sneaker ped.

I had a bunionectomy/osteootomy (arthritis taken out and pin put in) May 22nd.
Dont tell doc but Ive been wearing the surgical shoe in the house. It still keeps my foot from bending but keeps me from getting that front of the leg pain.

You might have to go up a size during your recovery.

Itsanewme:

Okay, I know what you are talking about with the sticky type ace bandage. It is what they used on my foot as the outer layer of bandaging. I had the cotton and gauze wrapped around my foot and the sticky ace bandage over that. I think that is a good idea your doctor suggested of wearing that around your foot inside the tennis shoe for a while. It will kind keep your foot steady and provide extra support. I think you may have to go up a shoe size or half a size with the shoes at first if you have some swelling still. I did not have to use the bandage on the left foot when starting to wear my shoe on that foot this week but I did have surgery on my right foot at the same time as the left and was able to put a shoe on with the sticky ace bandage on and my foot felt better than it had in so long. If it is just wrapped like twice around the foot it is not too thick.

Just walk gently and carefully and also you may find you are feeling pain in spots on your foot that hadn't hurt before and that is normal. I wish you much luck. Keep us updated on how it goes.

Dancinboots: This is dinkles and I had plantar fibromas (3 in all) removed from the arch of my left foot and a plantar wart dug out of the heel of my left foot and something called porokeratoses removed from the ball of my right foot. All at the same time. Figured it would be better to have everything done at once under anesthesia than the surgery for the fibromas and two separate office procedures for the other two things. I had never had foot problems until the last 7 months and now it seems one thing gets fixed and another problem pops up.

i think most people went up a size in the sneaker. i had to go with a wider width whic really helped. try wearing the sneaker so the foot will recover faster.
