Last couple of days the gum at the back of my mouth has been extremely painful. It is an area where two teeth have previously been extracted (long time ago so well healed from extractions) If there was a tooth there I would think I had an abcess. Not sure whats going on. Could the tooth closest to painful area be causing a problem although the tooth does not hurt? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

It could be pain radiating from other teeth or it could be the teeth above or below the area are gnawing the gum tissue since you are missing teeth in the area as well, correct? Teeth tend to need other teeth to rest on which is why dentists often recommend that missing teeth be replaced in some way. In some cases, teeth will shift in an attempt to meet other teeth or simply b/c other teeth are not there to prevent them from doing so. You probably should however go see your dentist and let him check it out - even though there are no teeth in the area it still could be a gum or bone infection or abcess forming.
