HI there! I have only been on Prilosec for 2 weeks. I made the mistake and stopped for 3 days. It came back on me, (the reflux) and now I started again today. Ugh! The box says only take for 14 days and then wait for 4 months before starting again. I have friends who have been on them for years straight. I hear its ok. Maybe there are some side effects and I would like to know too. But I definately know that I need the meds longer than 14 days. I think it's still too soon to tell if I have a chronic problem. How bout you?

Two years. I'm completely dependent, but I can eat, therefore I am alive. A fair trade-off.
The only real issue is potential vitamin deficiency, particularly B12. A supplement usually fixes it, and most people have no problems.

The 14 day thing isnt because of any problem with the drug, its that the FDA thought that if you needed it for more than 2 weeks, you should be under a doctors care for your GORD

Ok if that is the case, when should I or any person have a scope done? After 2 weeks? Or a month? I have only had these for like 3 weeks. It's my first time on a PPI (Prilosec). I hate to rush in and have a scope done this quick unless it is necessary. Any thoughts?? Thanks!

I was first treated for stomach pains at a clinic aimed at those with little or no insurance. They did a blood test for H. Pylori right off, negative, and I was told to stay on the PPI's, but see a gastroenterologist if it didn't improve within 3 months or so.

Thank you Jane! I will take your advice. I hope it clears up here in the next few weeks. If not I will get further testing. Thanks! I hope you are well!

I wouldnt rush for the scope..... take the stuff for 3 months, to give everything a chance to heal.....if you are still getting symptoms then, go for a GI specialist, if the symptoms are gon, you can probably safely keep taking your OTC prilosec to keep things under control

Thanks for the advice! I will just hang in there faithfully on the prilosec and see how I heal up. I will get seen if it doesn't clear. Thanks!!

I have been on Prilosec for two years now. I think it's starting
to lose its effectiveness on me. I'm really hurting right now (upper
middle chest). I am also taking Carafate... Mylanta... and Aloe
Vera gel (the ingestible type).

I am wondering if the prilosec isn't working for me. I would say at this point it relieves my symptoms about 50%. I am just not normal. I don't know if I should up the dosage. I am on 20 mg a day. I know some people take way more. Any idea's??

I've been on 40 mg for a couple of years now. Even on 40 it's not perfect, I need to be a little careful about what I put in my tummy, but I get by.
