Hi Gang,
I have really noticed that I am becoming quite careless and forgetful on the Methadone, I am wondering if you all think it's because its just stronger than what I took before (tramadol and lortab) and I will get used to it?
I get halfway to the grocery store and forget my purse and have to turn around.
I had coffee with a friend on her patio and realized as I was pulling in to my house that I had left all my shopping sitting at her house, including meds, which is NOT like me, even though there were no narcotic meds, and my friend wouldnt take them, I was just shocked, If I had my methadone in a bag, I would have walked away from that too.
I am scared I will lose a prescription or my purse and we all know what a nightmare that is.
I forget things in the microwave, or I will go into another room 5 times each time forgetting what it was I wanted.
Anyone else have this happen? does it get better? any ideas? I love this med and do not want to go off it.
Thanks!
Fabby

Fabby,
I really don't think this has anything to do with the methadone.
It's probably just a character flaw.:D
I think it's time you went in and had a subcutaneous GPS device installed so friends and loved ones can track you down when you're off on a "mini vacation."
steve
PS-Fabby, everyone reacts to methadone kinda like this, with their own special idiosyncrasies. What you get used to is having to take special care in situations like this one. You just learn to be extra careful, that's all.

Pepper, you were smarter than I am to begin with, so you'll be fine.
I wonder if I could have a computer chip installed like my dog has so he doesnt get lost?
Thanks Steve and Pepper, glad to know others have the same reaction, I guess I just need to remind myself to always double check.

Fabby,
I was already forgetful before i used methadone. So, for me it really was hard to tell if little mistakes like that were from the meds, or just me.
The one side effect that bothered me most was the propensity to doze-off. Didn't matter where I was or when it was. It there were more than a few minutes of idle time I was a goner. I'd even fall asleep on the throne. Watching movies became a thing of the past because I couldn't stay awake no matter how interesting it was.
And when I dozed off I would dream. When I would "come to" it wasn't unusual for me to continue a conversation that I was having in the dream. The looks I'd get were priceless.
Bottom Line - Best pain relief in the world.

You know how to make a girl smile.
This is one thing that does scare me about switching. Not to butt in on your thread but since it is the subject of methadone. How tired does this med make you Fabby? Is this what is making you have the forgetfulness.

I tried methadone a while back. I couldn't function with the stuff. Like I fell asleep......all the time. I don't remember if it made me forgetful.

You know I had some of the tiredness, but nothing like what the guys are saying, I can watch a movie.
I couldnt at first, it took me several months on a stable dose, but I have never dozed off while I was engaged in something.
I would fall asleep sitting up at the computer when I first started, for like 10 minutes or so, it's when your mind wanders.
I read a lot, and I dont think I could ever take a med that didnt let me read, I sure dont get through as much at a time as I used to, like before bed, but I can still read a few chapters before I start to nod.
Be very careful with this med when starting while cooking or if you smoke, I would make myself stand in the kitchen the whole time if I had something in a pan that could burn, and tried to stick with the microwave which had a timer when I was home alone. All that happened were a few wasted lean cusines while I snoozed on the couch, I was always surprised to find them in there the next day lol.

I am in big trouble I am not on methadone & already doing everything listed. I swear I cant remember how to spell at times, which I have always been darn good at. I am forgetful & just do stupid things. I was already a bit of a scatterbrain so I guess I better stay away from the methadoen period. I might forget where I live or something (ha). Sammy

LOL Sammy maybe methadone would make you stop being forgetful, kind of the way ritilin is a stimulant but calming for people with ADHD.
You never know.
Since my last post, I made coffee, and put coffee into the maker without putting a filter in first. even the dog is laughing at me. :jester:
PS Sammy OMG I am so sorry, I forgot you yourself suffer with ADD/ADHD, Please know I meant no disrespect by my remark above. See title of thread for explaination.

Hi Fabby!! You have described ME to a "T"!! My memory is so bad that I have forgotten to even check in here in almost 2 weeks!! Wish I could tell you that things got better for me after I was on it for awhile, but I still feel like I'm only half-way normal on most days....but I can't find the same kind of pain relief from any other med at the price. Even with all the absentmindedness and stuff, I still wish I was on methadone. I've never had such good pain relief, and I suspect I never will. Those were the good days. My family might not agree though. They got pretty tired of me nodding-off and being so forgetful. Didn't bother me because it's kinda hard to be annoyed at what you can't recall... Life was so simple back then...

I really am finding those symtoms of nodding become less and less the longer I am on it, I think the first month, I didnt even notice I was scatterbrained, thats how scatterbrained I was!
I couldnt agree more about the pain control. The main thing I love about it is the coverage. No more waking up stiff and in agony and laying in bed for an hour waiting for my meds to kick in.
I am worried though because I am the main responsible person in my house (you have no idea what a great cosmic joke of the universe it is that this is so) and I need to be on top of remembering a lot of things, bills, meds and appointments not just for me but for bipolar hubby who basically works and comes home. I do everything around the house, I have even been known to design and build a deck or fix a washing machine.
I am just so happy with this med and I hope I can stay on top of the bewilderment, I could see myself losing my purse or wandering into a crackhouse looking for the library or something.
Thanks for all the replies, you all are the best.
Hugs, Fabby

There is an answer.
I have used a Palm Pilot religiously for years now. My Palm Pilot IS my brain. I keep all appointments, to dos, everything in there. I enter when meds are to be refilled, the script number and the number of the pharmacy. I put in all birthdays and other celebrations. I put in when each of my meds are due to be taken. I use it to wake up. If there's something I need to be thinking about, I enter that and set it to repeat every so often. Whenever I complete or finish any of these things I use the interface to indicate that it's done. I keep my meds list in there. I can't tell yo haw many times I've been in a docs office or the hospital and when asked what I take I just hand them my Palm Pilot. Mu Palm even has Wi-Fi, so I use it for email. It also has web capability and sometimes I use it to see what's going on here. If you ever notice a string of very short posts from me, you can be sure I was using my Palm to enter text. It's too hard to type long replies. I enter all the questions I have for my doc at my next appointment. If one of my kids owes me money I put the IOU in my Palm. When the kids ask me to do something for them later or on another day, they don't leave the room until they see me enter the item in my Palm. Last night my wife told me that she needed help picking up the car from the mechanic this afternoon, and when all I said was OK, she waited until it went into my Palm. As you can see, everything goes in there.
My PM doc recently asked me to be a participant in a study on BT meds, and one of the qualifications was experience with PDAs, personal digital assistants. She has seen me use it at every appointment with her and just knew I would be a good candidate, especially because of the Palm.
Ever seen the commercial "this is your brain on drugs?" Well, for me the image would be a Palm Pilot instead of an egg burning in a frying pan. I am "one" with my Palm Pilot. And, I have used quite a few because they get so much use. I keep them backed-up on my computer (pretty easy) so if it breaks I've not lost any data. You can get one for about $99.

The new Blackberry phones are supposed to do everything a pda can. I think even the Sidekick would work. My daughter has one and it's never out of her hand....of course she's a teenager.
K'Mac, good to hear from you!
Fabby, I hope your forgetfulness eases with time. I would be in the same boat as you. I swear my boys(10, 15, 19 and my hubby) sit around like baby birds with their mouths open waiting for me to get home. They would die without me!
Methadone is next on my list to try and there are days when I think I'm going to ask my doc to do the switch but I don't know if I could handle the nodding off or the mental lapses. I already have to write everything down. Good Luck.~Mush

I really do not want to scare anyone away from this med. It is affordable and excellent pain control.
That said. My sons are both in college and I am more likely to need their help than the other way around. When they were small I did day care in my home so I could stay with them, I cant imagine being on this med then, at least not at first.
I would still say to try it, maybe you will be comfortable at a low enough dose you wouldnt have the side effect, and not every person has the same reactions. I will say I have never fallen asleep while say talking to someone or while I was doing something I needed to finish, As long as you dont allow yourself. to zone out, you'll be okay. Just I wouldnt smoke or fry anything if you are home alone until you know how you will react.
Steve, I will look into getting an organizer, but what if I forget to check it? lol j/k good idea and I thank you.
BTW, I was nervous about getting my prescriptions this morning, because my doctor is on vacation and he told me to just call a day in advance, I was not hopeful lol it has been my experience that this place takes much longer than a day to do anything, but it was there. yay!

Hi Fabby,
I had the same thing happen to me when I had my arm injury. This arm injury was a workers comp thing so it reall lasted a long time and I was put into PM. eventually the PM put me on Methadone. I swear I have never had a pina killer that worked so well. It really covered the pain.
I was put on it right after I had ulnar nerve entrapment surgery at the elbow. That ulnar nerve is a dooosy!
After about 3 months on it I told the PM I was having a hard time with the side effects. I would get up at night and go to the bathroom and nod on the potty. I was in college classes at the time and I was generally good for my morning class, but inbetween the morning class and mid afternoon class I would go to my car and sleep. Thank God for my little SUV has tinted windows. I would literally have to set the alarm on my cell phone because I was afraid that I would fall asleep and not make it to class.
Reading was very very hard. I would read the same line 3-4 times and not remember what it said. Studying was really hard for me that semester. I had taken two classes, Psychology and Anatomy and Physiology 1. I got an A in the Psychology class and a C+ in the Anatomy class. I was really bummed. That is the lowes semester grade I have ever recieved.
What worked for me to keep track of thigs was to always make sure that I got up and moving well ahead of time for things that had to be done. I carried around an organizer inside my purse, and yes I forgat mine a few times too. I had to write doctor appt's etc down in the organizer, have their business card taped to the dashboard of my car along with other reminders. Even then I still forgat things. People would tell me things and I would forget. I did feel awful and totally insecure about this issue. It was embarassing and a few times humiliating.
I hope that over time it will improve for you. I was on it a short time so I don't think I had a chance to tell if some of the side effects went away.
I had finally just got to the point that I could not stand the side effects and the methadone was working so well I wanted to know if I really had pain anymore. So armed with those two reason for getting off of the methadone I went to the PM and we started the decreaseing process. Actually that process is what led me to this we site.
Anyway to my total surprise the methodone and the surgery had flared things up afterward but the methadone was able to break the pain cycle and since then my arm has been soooo much better.
Now that I have then neck injury the arm has different issues. I sometimes wonder if I took the Methadone agan would it break the Pain cycle with my neck. I had a hard time during the taper. Izzy would remember this. She helped me some during that time. And som others on this board. I have opted not to try that theory.
I hope these side effects will settle for you and your body will become acustomed to the medication. I think it will take some time so hang in. Just wnated you to know I experienced a lot of the same issues and you are not alone.

Chrissy,
Thanks so much for your helpful and supportive post. I am completely in awe of you being able to go to school on it and get a passing grade. I could get maybe a B- for drooling on my desk, ha ha!
I am going to stay on it, its what my new doc has all his CP patients on, and I think unless I wanted to go back on the tramadol and the lortabs, which were not working anymore, this is it for me.
Like you and Steve said, I am amazed and pleased with the pain control, I will let everyone know if the side effects abate over time. It seems like we all had pretty universal issues with it.
Part of me wonders though, are we blaming to much on the one med? I cant imagine I would be winning any spelling bees the first few months on duragesic or opana either. Those of you who have been on some of those as well as methadone, what is your opinion?
My hope, since it is so affordable and working wonders for my quality of life, is that the side effects become less and less, then I can whole heartedly recommend it to others.
Steve, I wanted to ask too! Pepper, I was picturing you as a Bond girl, water skiing with her spy organizer. Painy Galore? <eg>
Thank you all for the great feedback, I will never stop saying it, you all are the best people on the net!
Hugs, Fabby

It does take a lot longer to get used to the side efects and some you may never get used too. Great pain relief has a cost and it's a matter of are you willing to pay the price? Can you function like this or are you waiting to accomadate hoping to be able to function? I honestly felt like almost 3 years just passed by and I missed those years where my daughter was growing up. Sweating, forgetful, sleepy, no labido, had no motivation or desire to do any work myself as far as getting better which are the most common side effects. It;'s easy to leave it all to a pill but at what price? Maybe backing off a prcentage and seeing if you can function and allow more time to accomadate may ease some symptoms.
Of course it's working great, it's a huge leap from hydro and Ultram. We all have different levels of what we can tolerate and what's exceptable. Might want to ask those around you if they see the difference in any other ways.
Good luck, Dave

Hi Dave!
Good to see you, thanks for the response.
Yes, my friends and family have all commented that they see me out of bed and less withdrawn than I was, doing things I havent done in years, puzzles and listening to music, things like that. I laugh more and nap less than I did before.
I resisted going on a stronger med for just this reason, I didnt want the sedation, but after 15 years, the tramadol and lortab were really not effective.
I have a much better life at this point than I did before I made the switch, I am happier and in much less pain, some, but much less.
For me there are just not many options, financially this is probably the only LA med I can afford to be on.
I may ask to lower my dose, trade some pain for some brain, lol.
Thanks again.
~Fabby :)
PS~How are you doing, Dave? You are such a huge beacon of hope for many of us, are you still working? I can't imagine I would ever be able to do something like that again, and I admire you for taking it on when I know you are still in pain. anyway, would love an update if you have the time.

I'd have to agree with Steve on that one. Great minds think alike!!:D
If you tell your doc you may end up stuck without the great pain control you have now. Dropping 5-10mg for two weeks would be a good test and then you'd have that emergency stockpile we all need.~Mush

Thanks everyone for all the great replies!
Okay heres what I have decided to try and why:
I am going to stay on the full dose of methadone I am on now (40 mgs per day) for another 6 months.
The reasons is that it is excellent pain control, and affordable, and I am in a positition to have a lot of help, I dont drive, I know how, but I have a phobia about it and havent driven in years. Hubby takes me or I take the bus and light rail.
I no longer have young kid, both my sons are adults in college (my baby made the deans list again yay) and are great about helping me out around the house.
Hubby adores me and doesnt mind coming home and cooking dinner for me, so I have an opportunity here to be safe and still give it enough time to see if things settle down, or if I can develope enough counter action of my own (like a blackberry) to work through it.
I have a wonderful dog, so if I fall asleep by the creek, he wont let the squirrells eat my eyes or anything. :(
If at the end of the 6 months, my symptoms are worse or unmanageable, I will try lowering the dose.
Besides, I have nothing else to try, I cant afford any of the other LA meds, and going back to the tramadol and lortab would be next to useless.
I'll let you all know what happens and thanks for all the friendship and support, I treasure you all.
Hugs, Fabby
