OMG!!!!
I just did some figuring on my finances and I am shocked!!! Help!
I have two months worth of money left to run my household and live with the current cost of my medications.
I have got to do something. The prescription discount card I have is awful. I am sorry to say but I am going to have to stop some of my meds and decrease some others.
The percocet I take costs $259.00 for 180 10/325 pills. 1-6 per day allowed and I usually take all 6.
The Robaxin 750mg I am allowed 3 a day and 90 pills a month costs something like $70.00
The Morphine Sulphate 30 mgs 3 xdaily or 90 a month costs $125.79
The Valium 5 mgs 20 a month casts $4.54 a month.
I think when I see the PM on July 7th I think thats the date, I am going to have to tell him I can no longer afford the robaxin and will stop taking it. I just called in the refill for it but I am not picking it up. I just can't afford it.
I am going to cut back the percocet to 3 a day. The I am going to ask for an increase in the Valium because it is the cheapest thing I am taking and it does help.
All these prescription costs are not even including the other meds I take like the Trazadone and my Estradiol etc.
This is so scary. I can't believe this is happening. I mean I knew it was coming but I just geuss I did not realize or want to realize the volume of the problem.
There goes any visits for the gastro doc because that is not covered by my insurance. Or any other stuff.
Talk about stress and making the pain go up. I swear my life is going to come to a screaching halt. I will not drive anywear unless I absolutley have to, not with these gas prices.
I just can't believe this on top of all the pain and struggles. Friday could not get here fast enough! I hope the neuro can get me on the schedule ASAP.
My attorney is waiting on my Neuro to give him a written letter of his dictations of the neuro's assessment on the upcoming surgery and what he thinks the future treatments or surgeries will later be needed. Even the things that might need to be done years from now. For example more fusion above or below the one he will do soon.
Once the attorney has this he can pursue the process of trying to make a settlement.
Do you thin it is inappropriate to ask my Neuro if he has done this letter yet and if not can he work on getting it to the attorney ASAP. Or should I ask the attorney to ask the neuro to hurry up with the statement?
My pain level is through the roof and i need to go lay down. I will check in...in the morning.
So sad and now very concerned on top of the pain.
I know I have to trust that God will take care of me, but first I need to process what I just figured out and let it sinl in.

I do not think it is the least bit inappropriate to ask for the letter - I would write him a letter asking for it and explain the urgency - ask if it would be possible to pick up the letter on a specific date - like take it in on Tuesday (not Monday too busy) and say you are willing to come back on Friday to pick it up
Have you thought of that program Montel Williams sponsors for medicine, my daughter gets 3000 dollars of medicine every month for $7.59

Chrissy, if you have not already done so check out this thread:

Also see if you can be switched to something like methadone that is not so expensive.
I would most definitely explain the situation to you lawyer and your surgeon. That is totally understandable. Also if all else fails, I know no one likes to do this but can you lean on your family for help.

Hi Crissy,
This happened to me too, you have my utmost sympathy. My meds were combined with my husbands, who is bipolar, for a cost of almost 2 thousand dollars a month at the time we lost health coverage.
There was no way we could pay it. Let me share with you what I found, maybe some of it can help you too!
I looked in the front of my phone book for county health and called and made an appointment for a financial screening. This was painless, we just had to bring photo ID, SS cards, and last years tax returns.
We were approved for $20 co pays for office visits, and $10 prescriptions IF the small county pharmacy carries the med.
Then the $4 generic program started at Walmart, that helped alot, but the only pain med on the list was tramadol. great for me, because thats what I took at the time and had been paying almost $300 a month for it.
The county doctors helped hubby apply for some drug scholorships, and now 3 of his meds we get for free.
We make too much income to qualify for any kind of welfare or food stamps, so this was amazing to me, like an answer to a prayer.
My doctor switched me to methadone, which I get for $10 a month. when I think that I used to pay over $700 a month for my meds alone, I am amazed we hung on as long as we did.
I dont know what its like in your state, but I was pleasantly surprised that I go to a large modern medical building and the staff is over worked, but friendly and professional.
Target also has a $4 generic program now, and even if your doctor has you on contract as mine does, if you need to use more than one pharmacy for financial reasons, you can just tell them that, My doc not only said okay, he wrote down everything I told him and now shares what I found out with his other patients.
Dont give up, I know its hard, we try so hard to find a doctor and a med regime that gives us quality of life, and then find out we cant afford it, its extremely upsetting! I have every faith you will find a way as I did.

Sorry to hear about your troubles Chrissy....Life is a TEST, and God certainly is testing you right now.
From what you posted, it appears as if the Percs are the main issue. I would be honest with the Doc and see what he would recommend? Are the generics costing you this much, or are you taking brand? There are several Oxy IR meds out there that should be much more reasonable. In addition, there are other options as well in the LA family.
Good luck and please keep us posted. I"ll be thinking of you.

Thanks Izzy - the other thing is to ask your doctor to talk to the drug rep about getting you free samples until you can work something out but the PPARX has been a life saver for my daughter's family and it is not solely based on income, they also look at your situation- there is some paperwork involved but well worth it hugs Aver

Hey everyone,
I think I overreacted a bit last night.
Ok.....Before I slept on it I called my Mom and we talked. She reminded me that I shouldn't worry about it because hopefully the attorney will be settleing my case in the next few months. The other thing she said was that the family will help me if it gets to that.
To answer some of of the questions, I have looked into the other pharmacy's with the 4 dollar meds. None of my meds have been on any of the lists.
I do take generic brand meds always...if they don't make it in a generic then I have to get brand, but all the pain meds etc are generics. The Valium is a name brand, but it is the cheapest thing I take.
I think I am going to call the prescription drug discaount program I have coverage with and ask them to send me a list of all the pain meds they cover. If they can.
This the biggest problem. The prescription coverage is only a discount program. There are now co-pays or any of that...the drugs are only discounted. It is like going to the store and buying an item that has been discounted a few dollars.
I really have to watch the money now and hope and pray that the Neuro gets the information..letter with his statments of the present and future treatments , off th=o the attorney soon. As soon as the attorney has that info he will start the settlement process.
It is just sad. My Mom said I have been very sad lately and crying a lot to her. SHe gave me the MOM pep talk and said I need to pull out of it. I tried to justify it because the added 4 days I was sick, but she is right.
You know when I get the settlement, all the money I spent on prescriptions will be returned because it came out of my own pocket. I guess I am just Literally "paying the Price"
Please everybody pray that I can get on the surgery schedule this coming Friday. I see the Neuro at 10:45 and I am hoping that his surgery coordinator will have the time to get me put on for a date.
Do you all think it is wrong to discuss this with my PM? I see him after the 4th of July. I don't know...maybe the best thing to do is just wait to see what the neuro says and when I will get a surgery date. Hopefully he will put me on the schedule this time.
Please pray I can get this all figured out and be on the way to getting better.

Hi Chrissy, since you're unable to work, have you tried applying for SSI and SSDI yet? SSI doesn't pay a whole lot but it will help out until you can get SSDI. Also if you qualify for SSI, you will automatically be eligible for food stamps and medicaid. You should check out the Social Security website and you can apply on-line for both.

I just wanted to post and say I wish you luck. This is something I fear as well since I have no insurance. I fortunetly found a mom and pop pharmacy that assists anyway they can with my meds. They were also 75% cheaper than the chain store I was going to. It is so very hard dealing with all this and I will pray that you can find the assistance you need. God Bless, morgyporgy

Theres one more thing I thought of, do you have a Cost-co or other kind of membership club shopping place near you?
I remember hearing that it is federal law that anywhere there is a pharmacy, you can use it, even if you are not a member, all you need do is tell the greeter-gestopo that you are only going to the pharmacy, they cannot keep you out.
Cost co offers up to 80% savings across the board. there is no list, every med they carry is deeply discounted.
worth a try. BTW Your mom sounds like a sweetheart.

Thanks everone,
When I made this post the utter shock of it all was still in the process of settling in.
Fabbs I do have a Costco card. That is where I was yesterday when I met the Lady with the same Neuro as me.
I recently...well about 6 months ago changed pharmacy's not because of prices but because the pharmacy was always out of what I needed and I was not really shopping for groceries in there anymore.
At this time I really feel it is all because I have only discount coverage of prescriptions and no matter what place I go to the cost is just a discount. it will always just be that way with this insurance plan they pffer at my school. It is very hard for me to get a personal health plan because of all the pre-existing stuff. the arm and now neck injury, the gastro problem, they Thyroid, and of course the two time I went to treatment for street drug and alcohol abuse. I got to get back into the working feild so I can get under a group health plan. Soon I hope. I hope the surgery will do enough good to get me to a place I can return to the work force maybe by January. After the fall semester of classes.
As for the no money coming in....well my Mom has offered to help and my sister has alwasy offered to help. I think I was in total shock of the totallity of things! I know eventually the settlement will come and it will be a substantual enough of one that I will be set for a long while and have sme to invest, it is just a matter of time time time.
So I am not worrying about it and My mom told me I was foolish to consider trying to cut out certain meds. I have decided she was right and I will just continue and be careful not to pruchase anything else uneeded from this point on. With the exception of the wedge pillow for after surgery.

Hey Chrissy,
I can only offer my advice on pain meds, however if you are looking for an economic way to control your pain, talk to your doc about methadone. Usually they cost something like $12.00 for 90 5mg tabs or something like that at any rate I believe this may be the most inexpensive way to go. JoJo

chrissy you sound abit better, I am late in reading some of the posts. I feel for you & have been in your shoes, it creates a real fear in you. I hate the way people have to worry about being able to afford their meds. So wrong.
I hope you let us know when you find out about this surgery I have been wondering about it. What a wonderful mom you have. If my mom was still here she would have said something like that to. As for you orginal question about asking the doctor for the letter, well if you are in a bind what could it hurt. Any doctor with compassion should understand your worries. I do understand not all doctors are compassionate. I hope yours is. As always you are in my prayers. Sammy

Hi all,
JoJo, I was on methadone one time and I really had a hard time with the side effects so right now I am staying away from that option, but thank you.
Sammy, i am with you on the fear it creates. I wasin total fear when I posted. After thinking about it and getting into a better frame of mind, I had a different out look and plan.
I do have some things to discuss with the PM such as the possibility of switching from the robaxin to just the valium because it is so much cheaper. I will se if he offers it first. I hate to suggest certain drugs ya know.
As far as the surgery goes, I hope after Friday's appt in the morning, that I may have a chance to get on the schedule before the end of the day. If not I am shooting for Monday. SO I will let you know.
The letter from my Neuro was already requested by my attorney so I will call him tomorrow and see if he has heard anything about the dictation yet.

Chrissey, hope everything works out for you, and hopefully you/dr can come up with effective painrelief and still not break the bank. I thought of this post yesterday when I was getting me own meds for next month. The total costs was 90.00 euro. That is the max anyone pays in the month anything over that in a month isnt charged. My physio of course is seperate a 50.00 euro a half hour ! so I wonder sometimes where the money has gone but add them all up and your not long going thru the money.
I hope that this will not be a worry for you when everything gets sorted and remember your mums offer, even if you want to look at it as a loan and pay back so much each month.... it is an option so dont get worked up about it as you know that just leads to increase of pain.

I am not sure if this info will be helpful, but it may be worth checking out.
I do not know what Pharm. you use but with my plan they like us to do mail in when possible but through research I have found that I can get several of my meds cheaper without using my insurance script card. At Wmart I can get 2 of my meds for $4ea. a month when I was paying $15 ea. a month thru ins. script card. Then with a little more research I found out the name of the drug companies that make the name brand and the company name of the generic brand and I contacted them about my meds and on some I got coupons that brought down the costs to less than $18 a month for what ins. was charging me $35 a month. Then on one of my meds (not a pain med) that my part costs me $50 a month the drug company sent my ins. company coupons to cover that for the year.
I hope this offers you some options. Another thing a friend of mine who is a pharmacist also told me to ask at the pharmacy and at your dr.s for coupons or for samples. This is how I found out to contact the drug companies.
Good Luck!

Good Luck!

I forgot that I found a coupon sitting on my daughter's gi doc's desk and now we get her Prevacid for free. Before we were paying $30 a month. It is a good idea to ask your doc if their are any coupons for meds you take.~Mush

Thanks AC,
For right now I am going to try to hang in there. As per my other post I will see the Neuro (he does not prescribe my meds the PM does) and I am hoping to get on the surgery schedule very soon to have the 2 level ACDF. I am hoping the surgery will go well and I can get off or at least start to reduce these meds some.
But that is interesting info and I am going to ask my pharmacy for some suggestions or any info they may have.

Chrissy,
my heart goes out to you.
We are in same boat even though I do have insurance. But my co-pays between me and my husband's meds are very high (he has diabeties and kidney problems). Only co-pay for Percocet is $100.00, not to mention 13 other medications.
This is so rediculous and so tough: I also on disability not by choice of course and co-pays for surgeries, app and medicine eats up all what we make together...
I applied for help with my medicine at least, they sent me back my applications claiming that both of us have to make no more than $12,000 a year and not to own the house... This sad enough...
I am glad to hear that your wonderful family is there for you and that your case will be settled soon - at least something to look forward to.
Take care and all the best.

Hey Chrissy, I can't really add much as far as advice. You've gotten some excellent suggestions from so many. I just wanted to say that you are always in my thoughts and prayers and I am here if you need me. I might not have the right answers or the best advice, but I'm a good listener!
Thank God for your wonderful mom and family. You are truly blessed! I know you will make it through this. You are such an amazing person, with so much to give and so much determination.
Best of luck with your appointment. I hope the doc can speed things up for you so you can get this surgery over with and start on the road to recovery. Take care and God Bless. I'm rooting for you! Hugs, CMP/MM

Thanks everyone,
I am in the process of investigating some things. I am not going to jump into anything just yet. I want to see the PM on July 7th and see what he says.
I am going to make a new thread because I am really dissapointed at yet another delay in treatment.
Hope to see you all there. I know the delay is in my best interest but I could have had this done innetween the last appointments.
ANyway thanks again and I hope and pray that all are doing well these days. I know sooo many of us have been stuggling in different ways with the pain and other home issues etc.
