II have MS and a tooth ache. I am debating having a root canal or extraction. I read some disturbing things about toxins being released in the body when you have a root canal and how it could affect someone with a comprimised immune system. Anyone know anything about this. It is a back molar and I could live without it. Wondering...that's all. any advice or experience.

I think you should have the root canal done. You should keep your teeth as long as you can.

In my opinion, it depends on your age. If you are 45+, I'd say just have it pulled.

I had "inflammation" under my cap, because one of the roots broke . . . and I caused myself considerable grief by not dealing with it right away. Infection of any kind is bad for MS. I didn't want to have it pulled (because it was a molar), and I do miss it for eating . . . but I didn't have any choice and was only prolonging the inevitable anyway.

I have several caps, but I don't think I"d have another done at my age ~ 49 ~ unless it was a front tooth. I don't like the fact that many are made of Nickel, and I have had so many problems from them over the years.

I saw the recent article about the Food and Drug Administration lawsuit where they are actually now saying that certain dental amalgams may have harmful neurotoxic effects. I know this was specifically in regard to mercury but I know there have been discussions about nickel as well.

Not long before my ON sx started, the one cap I had fell out. I waited about 5 days to do anything about it so whatever materials were there underneath were exposed. I went to the dentist and he re-attached the existing cap and refilled an old cavity. My sx started within a week after that.

I'm not trying to discourage anyone from having dental work done or that I won't if/when it's needed but I can't say I haven't wondered if the exposed material or dental work had anything to do with my ON onset.
