i think i have a phycological problem... i dont feel pain as much as i think i should
i mean i had a severe cut to my knee right throught to the bone and reqired 13 stitches but i never felt a thing, i've been told by my parents i have a dangerously high pain threshold but i think it might be phycological.. ive never been phycologicaly examined so i would like to know what people think

Wow, that is definitely something very unusual. I have heard of some condition where someone doesn't feel pain at all. I can't remember what it is called but it is actually not such a great thing. Although some of us here on this board would love to feel NO PAIN for just one day. The people that have this condition could break a bone and not feel it, have an infection and not feel it, have cancer and not feel it. So having pain is our body's natural ability to let us know when something is wrong.

Now, you say that you feel some pain but not much. I think there are several possibilities:

1. You have a very high pain threshold and do not feel pain very easily

2. You may have some kind of psychological disorder (i.e. dissociate identity disorder), where your mind dissociates from itself when it is in danger or feels any kind of physical or emotional pain.

Have you ever had anyone else tell you that you may have some kind of psychological issues? Do you have normal emotional responses to certain situations? If not then you may want to have an evaulation by a psyhchiatrist or pychologist. I will be interested to hear what others may think

Upon reflection, I found my original response inappropriate.

there can also be a medical reason for not feeling pain or very little that would be stemming from a possible issue either within your brain at the thalamus or the spinothalamic tract(this holds the pain pathway to your brain) that could possibly be affected by 'something' that just has not yet been identified. in order to actually 'feel' pain, there has to be a very direct connection from the injury site,to the pain pathway then to the pain receptors within our brains. if something were affecting that chain in any way,it could be possible to not feel pain at all or have some strange "derangment" of it to some degree too. this occured on only one side of my body after a spinal cord surgery that created a syndrome where i feel sensation, even fine touch on my right side from the level of injury on down, but yet i simply cannot feel the difference between hot or cold of certain levels of very real pain. there just could very well be "something" that could be affecting your ability to feel pain,or simply deranging pain signals.

just getting an actual MRI done on your spine and also the brain could reveal something that you just are not yet aware of. believe me,you just have no real clue at all just what actually is in your own body til you actually get into it and see it upon some type of scan that finds it. i didn't have a clue that i was actually born with alot of different conditions and strange things actually IN my spinal cord til things got scanned and found. this just 'could' be one very real possible cause that should be looked into further. you really cannot say that something is all 'in your head' til you have ruled out all other medical possibilities. that would just be the easy way out for any doc and not wanting to help someone find reasons for symptoms or other strange things occuring within our bodies.

i would seriously discuss this issue with your doc and see if you can at the very least, get some MRIs done to really just 'see' what could possibly be creating this for you. there ARE solid medical reasons for what you have described that are not just in your head. i do wish you luck with this and hope you can find the underlying reasons for this to be even going on. please keep us posted in anything you find out. I understand what you mean Marcia, i have a simalar situation in my injured knee where i think i damaged my nerve endings....

my only problem with this is that i real rather large amounts of pain, say if i prick my finger with a pin that hurt more than acidentaly pushing a razor blade through my thunb

another thing i've thought about is maybe an 'over-production' of adrenaline
im not an expert and all i have is a biology GCSE so could this be possible?

aaah but if i didnt feel the blood i could have been to weak to get help and bled out where i was... it may be a blessing on the surface but if you look deeper it can be a curse

Yea lots, mostly abdominal, there was no real constant pain, just movement pain because of the cut muscles... my main concern last time was when i could eat again because i wasn't allowed to eat for a week ;)

I can't really be sure how bad the pain was because i was on morphine when i woke up, but i kept my sense of humor so can't have been bad
