I know many here have troubles with statins. I am one that, for now, has no problems with the Zocor I am taking. However, I don't want to take any higher dose than I have to.

I am 46, don't smoke, not a pound over weight, large family with no one ever having had a heart attack, relatively low fat non-meat eater who had a heart attack in February of this year and whose only two contributing factors could be hight cholesterol and stress.

I will cut to the chase regarding my numbers. If I don't take anything, I average around 240 TC and 158 LDL and 30 HDL. Horrible ratios. With 20mg Zocor, I get that down around 175 Total, 120 LDL, and 30 HDL (no HDL improvement ever on Zocor).

I added 20mg daily of policosanol and after 4 weeks my numbers are 150 Total, 91 LDL, and 41 HDL. Policosanol definitely has a significant affect on my numbers. No side affects for policosanol with a great deal of peer reviewed research on it. Relatively cheap at around $11 for 60 pills.

Some recommend taking 10mg, but I would go straight to 20mg.

Hey pcovers you and i are just about the same age.My mom died from a heart attack when she was 63,she also had diabetes.Dont know which caused the heart attack. So i guess you could say im high risk for heart disease. My total cholesterol was 302,im 40 pds overweight ,and my mom died of a heart attack. So i want to do everyhing i possibly can to get those numbers down.I read your other posts about the policosanol, and i posted a reply to one of them. But just in case you dont see my post, i have a question. If i remeber correctly you said you were taking zorcor and policosanol.Did you tell your doctor about taking policosanol?I dont want to stay on zocor for the rest of my life.So im going to give your suggestion about policosanol a try. Thanks for posting to the board about this.Ill let you know how it works for me .Oh i also read that one of the minor side effects is weightloss, that would be a bonus for me as im 40 pds overweight. Thanks

Yes, my doctor is aware of my taking policosanol with the zocor. Like most doctors, he was clueless about most alternatives. I gave him about 10 pages of clinical research on policosanol and directed him to the national library of medicine cite for further review. He was impressed with the data and has no problem with my taking the policosanol.
