Hi. I've posted on here once or twice before. I'll make a long story short, weird neurological symptoms for a long time...tons of docs, dx'd with Fibro a couple months ago. My primary referred me to a new neuro (first one he sent me to told me I was crazy), because of this extremity weakness. He wanted me to have another emg. Anyway go to new neuro and he mentions nothing about emg, he wants me to have an lp. One of the evoked potentials from before came back with a slight delay but mri's were ok.
Anyway, I have to have the lp and I am scared. He mentioned a demyleation (sp?) syndrome and/or ms. I am so confused and scared right now. I told my mom and she said, oh, I thought you already decited what you had (referring to the fibro) and it made me feel so bad because she obviously thinks I am making this up in my head. I dont know if I should get the lp or just not get it and ignore whats going on. Maybe it is in my head. I dont know what to do.
I know headaches are a risk with lp, but could I die from it? I'm scared.

Your fears are just that-fears. There is a slight chance for headaches, but if you follow your doctor's advice, you should be fine. If this test could save your life, would you have it? 85% of MS patients can be diagnosed by spinal fluid.
I have had 2 of them, 1982 and 2002. Trust me, 2002 was leaps and bounds better than 1982. You will be fine. Ignore any naysayers because you have to do what is best for you. Ignore the "scary" stories about the LP. Focus on getting results. If you do have MS, focusing on the stress is not good at all (nor good for any person).

Hi Missjay,
I do understand the fear that you must be going through right now. Your body is presenting all these new symptoms and you feel that you don't have any control over it and you don't know what it is. I experienced this feeling at 14 years of age when I was first diagnosed with MS.
If you are experiencing new symptoms, the important thing is not to ignore them and not to rule anything out.
In regards to the LP, try not to fear the worst. I will be honest, it is uncomfortable and painful, however it may be useful in finding out what may be happening to you.
It is also important that you trust the neurologist, and remeber that they are there to help you.
I know its much easier said than done but, try to take one step at a time and try not to fear the worst.
I hope all goes well for you :)
Good luck

Hi Missjay!
I'm kind of a newbie around here but I also had a LP. It was nothing! I had it done in my Dr's office and the most uncomfortable thing was laying flat for 3 hours. I did not get a headache or any adverse feelings at all. It was a relief to get it overwith and move on with my dx.
I know you are afraid but that won't help you get through this. Take a deep breath and relax. My thoughts are with you and I'm sure it will be fine. Take care.

Had to stay in bed rest of day and plenty of fluids, Had no headache at all for 2 days then i did alittle too much and must have open the hole and Got head aches for about 5 days, but once i chilled out agian and rest for about 4 days all better.
Just take it easy for a few days later, on the 3rd day i cut a cut the lawn and thats when the headaches came.
Good Luck and don't worry..

Hi MissJay, I also want you to know that Ive had two SPinal Taps...and they were both done in the outpatient part of the hospital...I had absoutley NO PAIN and NO HEADACHE at all! Its all about who does it and how often they do it....make sure that your doctor is experienced in doing them...you CAN ask that question!
I too, was told to drink plenty of caffeine the morning of...and the day afterwards..I had to lay down for 1/2 hour before they let me go and was told to stay flat for up to 10 hours that day..(had mine done at 7 am)..I spent the day on the couch, and only got up to pee and drink...I was fine (both times).
Youll be okay..the worrying about the spinal tap is 100x worse than the actual procedure, which only takes 10 minutes!
Try to think positively...at least youll have some answers when the results come back..

Being scared is a normal response to a very scary sounding procedure.
Reality is, the procedure for most is not bad at all. The headaches, as others pointed out, should not be an issue provided you take all the necessary precautions the day before, of, and if possible, the day after taking it easy.
Would I do my LP over again if I turned back time to before being dx'ed with MS? Absolutely. And I'm one of those who experienced the dreaded headache. Having the answer outweighs the headache 10 fold.

Thanks for your input everyone. I just don't know what to do. I want to know what is going on but I am so scared. Could I die? Could I be paralyzed? I have two girls to raise. I'm so scared I don't know what to do. I have the appt. scheduled for July 15th. I'm just going to pray about it. Thanks again for your input.

Could I die? Could I be paralyzed? I have two girls to raise. I'm so scared I don't know what to do.
I can say I have not heard of a death from an LP. Nor paralyzation (is that a word?).
I thought of it this way. I was so sick with symptoms, but what was really causing me such a worsening of symptoms was the stress and anxiety of not knowing. I knew having the LP would be a crucial test to getting the answers.
I almost ditched out on my LP, and my parents even supported me ditching out on it and not having it done. It was the secretary at the neuro's office who insisted, and explained why. So I went and had it done, got my diagnosis, and now I am doing worlds better than I was at the time. 90% due to the relief of having that test as part of my 'portfolio', 10% due to the IV steroids and taper period after.

I too was scared when i had my LP. Didn't even know what it was. To be honest i just wanted every test known just so they could find out what was going on with me.
I did feel the pinch yes but NO PAIN. i drank heaps of coffee, which i love so that part wasnt bad at all. Just dont forget to lat still.
Good luck, keep us posted.

Hi there,
I also had a LP a few years ago and will probably have another soon. I agree with the others that it was nothing. I felt pressure but that was all. The doctor told me that it might be uncomfortable as he initially goes in to the spine but after that I wouldn't even notice it. He was right!! My husband was there for moral support but he ended up making both the doctor and me laugh. He said when the fluid was coming out it looked like when sap is collected out of a maple tree to make maple syrup!! Just what I wanted to be compared to a tree! It did relax me and laughter is the best medicine, I think. Be calm and think that in a few minutes after the start of the LP, it will be all over!!
Good Luck!

Similar experience. My neuro had me talking and laughing throughout the procedure. I got a tickle down my back to my tail bone. Also found out I was allergic to iodine this way. He wiped my back with it before doing the needle and asked, "Are you allergic to iodine?" to which I replied, "I have no idea". He said, "Well, I am telling you now that you sure are, your back looks like it's sunburned!".

Chelle, welcome to our board. You should probably start another thread on this, youll get more replies, but I wanted to address what you said. First of all, please know you CANT drive yourself home after a spinal tap. Its very important that you lay flat for a few hours (my doc said 8) after the test..and on the ride home, should be at least lying back with the seat reclined..if you try to drive upright, your going to cause yourself problems..
As for your mom not being very suporrtive. Join the club- in my house, it is my husband, He has never gone with me to any appointments, or tests- lets me suffer in silenece about my aches and pains and fears...I have MS, do you?
I hope you find someone to help you thru this, in the meantime, youll find a WORLD of support here!

Thanks for all of the replies everyone. I am going to go thru with it. I need to know what is going on. Truly. I can't continue to live this way with no answers. I have so many wierd things that happen to me and this will help me figure out what it is. Thanks so much for your support. I'm glad you all understand.
Speaking of wierd sensations; has anyone ever had (the only way I can explain) is like when a muscle tightens but it's on the left side of my head. For 4 days its been doing that, couple times an hour I will be very aware of this sensation on the top left of my head. My left eye has been twitching a lot since this started too. Any ideas?

I have tightness as you describe, but mine is usually on my right side and affects my right eye. I have found cold compresses and accupressure to be great relief.

Thanks MSJayhawk. Do you know what the cause of this is? Muscle tension? I didn't think trying a cold compress. I will though. Thank you.

I do not know the direct cause. I do know it is MS. It could be that the muscles are worn out due to nerve damage, but that would be a guess (I am not a doctor). If cold compresses or accupressure do not help me, my last resort is bed rest for as long as needed.

I get that tightening, and also a weird hot feeling that is like a rush in my head. Facial twitching has haunted me for well over a year. Not so bad now, but for about 2 months, I honestly thought I had facial spasm (as it's called). It was non stop! Annoying now, off and on.

Thanks Nenu!!!!!!!! Prayers are a good thing! How much caffiene should I drink? My plan is to drink 32oz of water before, at home, and stop a Starbucks on the way and get a large with an extra shot of espresso. Then I'll have hubby get me some coke or pepsi or something to drink afterward. The doc that's doing it is supposed to be the best around. He is a neuro-radiologist and he does this all day long apparently. I'm feeling pretty confident about it. Nenu, in the event that I do get the headache, what should I expect? Did you require a blood patch? They want me down flat for 24 hours post procedure. I am going to do EVERYTHING they say to do. How long after did you experience your headache?

I'm not sure about the amount of caffeine, but the more the better from what I understand.
When I got my headache, I already had one of those little IV things in my wrist from the IVSM (steroids) I was receiving, so I went into the ER, they took me, put me in a bed, and hooked me up to some type of headache drug. No blood patch for me, I woke up feeling good and went upstairs at 6 am for a coffee. No further problems.
But the headache you mainly avoid by doing NOTHING the day of the LP. Resting the day after would not be a bad idea either. :)

don't worry about the LP, but if you can find out if they are using Fluoroscopy, it shows real time images to the doctor while performing the insertion, thats what i did this time, i'm sure not all hospitals have them, but its perfection when inserting the needle as they can watch it, my doc yelled at me to relax as i was trying to bend my head and neck up to watch it and he moved the monitors back so i couldn't look :D

A fluroscopy is the safest way to have an LP done..it allows the doctor to see exactly where he is going with the needle, and thus reduce the chances of hitting a nerve! Youll be in good hands, having it done this way is much preferred over doing it "old school" and hoping for the best!

missjay, words of caution, i didn't get headaches the first two days, because in laid down alot and drank gallons of fluids, but the third day i decided to run around, take a long drive, etc., i had to find a place to lay down, i got a blistering headache, nauscious, etc...so take it easy for 5 full days, it can take up to a week to recover fully

Well I got it done this morning at 9. My wonderful husband bought some thing for the laptop so I can use it in bed, which is where I am right now. I was surprised, it didn't hurt at all, not at all. Seriously, getting a b12 injection hurts more. Thanks to all for your support, and yes, the doc did use the floroscopy.
Ok, David. You have me worried. I don't want the headache. I am supposed to work tomorrow. Do you think going to work will cause me to get the headache? What should I do????
Oh, btw, there were two things being checked for, one was demylenation, o bands, etc and the other was my pressure which was suspected as high. I wont know yet about the other but he was able to tell me that my pressure was high. Apparently normal is 160, and mine was 240.

Well, that's neat that you have a way to be on the net while laying horizontal. Makes the waiting period seem that much shorter! ;)
Most will tell you that you'll be alright if you just stay laying down the day of, and continue to drink up that caffeine!
Maybe your BP was high due to the stress/anxiety from the procedure. Crossing my fingers for you on that one :)

You should be fine to go to work tomorrow, I went to work the same night I had mine done..just as long as you are laying flat for a minimum of 8 hours, you should be okay..
If you start having a headache while at work, lay down and then get to a doctor or to the hospital and tell them what you had done- there is an easy fix, if you dont wait a week to go there..
In the meantime, continue drinking caffeine when you get up and stay flat the rest of the night, and dont worrry about the rise in BP- its not that severe and you were probably elevated due to the anxiety of the procedure...glad it went well for you..

I was thinking I would be ok to go back to work tomorrow. I've been laying flat all day and that really is the hardest part but Nenu you are right, having the internet makes it go by faster. I work at an ambulatory surgery center so if I get a headache Ill just do lay down in one of the beds...lol. Maybe they could give me iv caffiene. Just kidding, I would call the doc who did it, he was amazing.
When I was talking about pressure I was talking about my csf pressure, not my blood pressure. My csf pressure was high for some reason.

Ohhh wow, I don't know a thing about CSF pressure, or what that entails.
I bet sleeping is tough with all the caffeine intake. Surprised they didn't LP and draw out a bunch of coffee/cola lol!
Reminds me, when my neuro did my LP, he hid the jar behind his back and told me to guess the color of the fluid. I guessed green. LOL, of course it's clear! :)

MissJay,
Glad that you had a good and and a wonderful husband! I think the laying flat thing was the hardest thing too.
Where did you have the lp done? Mine was by a Dr. in Novi. Are you in that area as well?
I hope you have a restful night and a great day tomorrow, I'll be thinking of you.

you will be okay going to work, but you will by my experience, get a headache, but not everyone does, remember lots of fluids and caffeine, the good part is that work is a controlled environment, so all you have to do is lay down, it literally only takes 15 minutes to get it to go away, you'll be fine

I just wanted to pop in and add that a high opening pressure can be caused from pressure within the skull (increased intercranial pressure) among other things. I have Chiari malformation and this is very common for us chiarians. Definately ask questions about this to your doctor. This can cause alot of neurological problems within our bodies. Since your opening pressure was high, I would talk to your doctor about what the causes could be.
I hope your feeling better after the LP. Good luck in your search for a diagnosis!!

Thanks for your replies everyone. David, you're still scaring me with this:
but you will by my experience, get a headache
Nenu, I am surprised that they didn't draw out caffiene also...lol. I had my LP done in Farmington Hills, at the M.I.N.D. Institute. It was great and didn't hurt at all. The hardest part was staying in bed all day while hopped up on caffiene, but yes I do have a wonderful husband and he did everything to make the day easier for me. My neuro suspected high pressure (do to my symptomology) as well as demylenation. I only know about the pressure because they are able to tell you right there what it is and what he brought it down to. Mine is most likely cause by a condition caused Psuedotumor Cerebri, and disgustingly I've most likely developed the condition by being overweight. I don't know for sure but when I go back to my neuro he will most likely dx me with that (because we talked about it before the LP) and then I will get my results for the other things we tested for. Oh, treatment for the psuedotumor is weight loss and water pill, btw.

Missjay,
I've heard great things about the M.I.N.D. Institute. My friend's son went there and the Drs were wonderful with him.
Keep us updated on your results, we will be thinking of you.

So far so good Missjay. How you making out today? Still laying out flat? Did you get some sleep with all the caffeine pumping through your system? :)

Glad to hear that you slept well. One thing I learned and value more than ever with my MS is sleep. I used to pull all nighters and sometimes went off 3 hours to work. Not anymore. Now I make sure I get my full 8 :).

when i was getting dx'd, the neurologist asked me how much i sleep a night, i responded on average about 4 hours, then she asked for how long, i said about the last 20 years....so now i guess its time to start sleeping more
