My combination of meds for pain are not working at all, and I'm very distressed with it all. I'm currently on Tramadol (100mg 4 times a day), Dihydrocoedine (60mg 4 times a day) and diazepam (10mg 3 times a day).
My problem is that due to my age (I'm 17), my doctor is very reluctant to prescribe anything stronger, which leaves me in limbo somewhat.
I'm literally in tears right now, the pain is so bad. I'm really not sure what I should do. I've tried going to the ER and they just x-ray my leg, tell me it's not broken and then tell me to go away.
I honestly can't cope with this pain much longer - what should I do? I'm really in a bad pickle at the moment and I wont be able to see my GP until monday now, my father is insisting that I'm not in as much pain as I claim to be.
So yeah, what ought I to do? Thanks in advance for any replies

Hi Chris,
I am so sorry you are going through this, its horrible enough just to be in pain, without having to deal with people being mean and not believing you.
Since your dad is kind of not stepping up for you, is there someone else who can go to the ER with you as your advocate? Your mom or an aunt or an older friend?
Its unfortunate that some people dont give people your age the same consideration they do for older folks, thats why I am thinking you might get farther with an advocate on your side.
You also may want to keep a pain diary. write down each day how your pain was, if you had trouble sleeping, walking, or anything like that, what meds and/or other therapy you have tried and what the results were. Then present that to the doctor at the next appointment.
Feel free to come here and vent or just visit as often as you like, we all understand that pain doesnt care how old you are and you will find loads of friendship and support here, you certainly have mine.

My family and I aren't on particularly good terms & my mother passed away about a decade ago unfortunately, so no, no advocate.
I will keep a pain diary, however, I think that's a brilliant idea. My doctor is always helpful when I take initiative and do something like that. Thanks.
Thank you very much for your kind words , I am very grateful.Best WishesChris

Chris, Welcome to the board! I'm sorry you are having such a struggle. And at such a young age as well. Sadly, because of your age, I think it is somewhat normal for doctors to not want to prescribe too much in the way of opiates/opioids. I know it's of no real help to just sympathize with you and I am not a med expert, but sometimes supplementing your current med regimine with over the counter anti-inflamatories or (I believe in the UK you call it) Paracetamol (sp?) Not sure if you've tried anything like that, but I can't imagine it could hurt. I know they sound pretty tame compared to stronger meds, but it is surprising how much they can add to the ones you already take.
Is it a General Practice doctor that you see? Or is it a pain management specialist? If it's a GP, you may want to see if you can get in to see a PM doctor. They are usually more in tune with chronic issues. You haven't mentioned exactly why you have this pain at such a young age. Can you elaborate a bit? Maybe this would help me and others to give you better suggestions.
As much as I hate to admit it, I think we all have someone in our lives who doesn't believe we are in as much pain as we are. Even family members. Your dad probably can't comprehend it because he has never dealt with it himself. I hope down the road, he can come to an understanding. If you have close pals who you can go to for support or if there are any pain support groups in your area, it might be a good idea to check them out.
Sorry I couldn't be any more helpful, but if it's any consolation, you are certainly not alone. There are so many people who come here for the same reason that you have. The good people here are always more than willing to help out with a sympathetic ear and whatever advice they can give. Please try not to become discouraged. There may just be a doctor out there who is the right fit for you. It may just take a bit of trial and error and a few visits with other doctors. Just try to make sure that you don't approach any new docs with a request for stronger meds right out of the gate. This tends to make them a bit suspicious.
Take care and please keep posting. There really are a lot of wonderful people here. Best of luck, CMP/MM

Thanks for the advice. I've tried using paracetomal and Ibuprofen along with my current meds and didn't find it made any difference to be honest, so I figured it made sense to take as few pills as possible, eliminating those which were unnecssary.
I made a very bad mess of my cruciate ligament (back of the knee), and I've been told by my doctor that although they'll be able to repair it, it wont ever fully heal, so I'll be in pain for the rest of my life. I also have an undiagnosed, fairly large lump in the back of the same knee, although they have confirmed that it's not my cruciate ligament poking out in the wrong place. I'm just praying that it's benign, because I'm not sure I can deal with another problem right now.
I'm seeing my GP at the moment, I will ask to be referred to a PM doctor, it sounds like a good idea, as they're more specialised.
Thank you,
Chris

Chris,
I am so sorry about your pain at such young age!
Even though it's an excellent board with people who are here to support and listen, but we can't suggest you what to take to feel better - we are not a DR...
My heart goes out to you, but the only thing I can suggest to you to maybe go and see another PM specialist? I know how hard this is to leave in constant pain, and if you see that something is not working you have to go and see another opinion. I understand about your age and strong PK, but the answer may be just in combination of different meds which may work for you; like my PM says "individual coctail".
Did you try ice or moist heat? Did you try PT or accupancture - some people get relieve from it too.
I wish I could give you a better advice or help you more, but I can't.
Best of luck to you, dear...

Thanks for the reply.
I've been told I'm not allowed to have accupuncture as I'm afraid of needles. I've been trying to keep it immobile at the moment. I'm not getting out of bed aside from using the toilet, and even then I'm on crutches.
I think a PM doc would be a good idea though, I'll talk to my GP at my next appointment.
Thank you
