Hi, I'm new to these boards. Looking for help. I had been on generic oxycontin for 2 years for generic disk disease. 40 mg, 2x a day with 5 mg oxycodone for break through pain. 3 months ago, I got regular oxycontin instead of generic. I feel awful. I'm nauseas, extremely tired, just don't feel good. Last month I got generic (for the last time) and felt good again. Yesterday, when meds were filled I was told no more generic. I'm back to feeling sick. Will this go away? I know most people prefer the regular Oxycontin, but the generic seemed to have no side effects with me. Anyone else know what I'm talking about? Thank you for any replies...

Hello and welcome. Sorry to hear about your troubles.
Do a "search" and look for the thread "brand vs Generic- major findings." It has lots of useful information about brands vs generics.
IMO, it sounds like the brand is more potent, and thus, you're having those side effects. Brands do tend to be stronger, per the discussion above. However, your body will adjust and soon you won't notice them.
Good luck and hope this helps.

Welcome to the board! I would whole-heartedly agree with Ex that it is in all likelyhood the difference in potency between the generic and the brand name oxycontin. I have taken both in the past and since the generic is no longer being manufactured, it may take some tweaking of your doses to even out your coverage. I have never had any luck with oxycontin lasting the full 12 hours that the manufacturer says it does and my pain management doc agrees. It may be prudent to reassess your dosing schedule to 3x/day. It would more than likely cut down on any negative side effects, while maintaining the same overall daily dose.
My current dosing schedule is 30mg/a.m. 20mg/mid-day and 30mg/bedtime. I still get 80mg total each day, but it is spread out over a more consistant timeframe. Is it possible for you to suggest this to your doctor at your next appointment? I would hope that he/she would see the logic in it, but then again, there are some doctors who are quite stringent about the manufacturer's dispensing recommendation. My doc also had to get a special authorization to change me to 3x/day, from my insurance company, because some of them are also quite rigid about the manufacturer's guidelines. But my insurer did OK it.
Best of luck with your dilemma. I am sure there can be some solution that will work for all concerned. Take care and let us know how it goes. CMP/MM
