Hello everyone.
I have been reading all your posts and see that many of you are unhappy with your meds....Zocar, Lipitor,Mevacor etc. I am about to have my doctor prescribe something for me at my next appt Friday. I would like to be able to suggest one, that works, and not come home with a prescription that doesn't work. I realize all meds are different for everyone, but no where do I read in here, that anyone LIKES what they are taking, because of side effects. Thxs for any info you may give me.

JeanneMarie,
I've just started a new one called Zetia (after trying Lipitor and Zocor both with undesirable side affects). My Doctor tells me that the side affects of this new med (Oct 02) are about like a placebo and so far since about a week on the pill, he's right. I did a little research and found several people at the worst experienced stomach aches. This med can be taken in conjunction with a statin to reduce Chlestorol even more. I'm trying it alone so I won't know the results until my blood test 3mos from now. They don't even do a 1 mo. test as it does not affect your liver like a statin does. You may want to ask your doctor what he thinks of this one...

Thx for the come back Morris. I went to the Mayo Clinic online pharmacy and there is nothing listed as Zetia. Is that the correct spelling? j

Ok, ok..I found it on another site. It reads that it usually is taken along with a statin, trying to further lower the cholesterol. But you were told to take it alone? Interesting, I'll see if my doctor tells me about this one. Thx.

I take 20mg of zocor. Have been taking it most recently for the last 12 months. No noticeable side effect.

Keep in mind that these forums serve the purpose of people seeking solutions. Most likely folks having a problem of one sort or another. You could have 10 out of 10 statin users on this board say they feel terrible and experience side effects. However, for every one person with a legitimate complaint or problem here, there are thousands with no complaints and no use for seeking out a forum like this.

Everything read on a forum must be viewed through the filter that acknowledges that this does not represent in any way, shape, or form the general population. It represents the population that is having some sort of problem and is seeking relief or remedy.

Keep this in mind when you look for input from this and other forums. You are getting a bias from a very specific population segment. Not necessary a bad thing, but something that has to be factored in. I do not take away from the genuine and real difficulties some folks experience with statins.

Thx PC....my doctor today gave me some Zocor to sample and a prescripion for more. I'll see now how I do on them. Since you've taken them for a yr, do you go in every 3 months for a blood test, watching the chol. numbers and liver functions..?

Thx for your input on alot of problems only show up here and not the good received from these drugs. That made me feel much better. Thx, again.

Yes, I do get tested regularly. Never had any issues show up with the liver test.

I should have also said that I took zocor for about five years previously with no noticeable side effects. I also watch my carbs and fats. I take Carlson fish oil and use olive oil for my oils. I don't really restrict myself on certain foods that some diets shy away from, such as walnuts and pecans. I don't eat much surgury things. I also have some stomach problems which requires that I be very cautious and aware of all that I eat. This certainly helps me to stay on a consistent diet.

I have been on all of the above; lipitor, tricor,
policosanol, non=flush niacin, etc. All have
either affected the liver or the body aches. I am
now not taking anything; exercise daily and try to
eat properly (but my problem is heriditary) and
I feel great. A simple pill doesn't seem to be the
answer. Yes, I loved the "numbers" when taking the
statins and non statins, but did not like feeling.
Would rather feel good than suffer the side effects
that they say you need to be on forever. Good Luck
