Rixtar 04-04-2003, 01:57 PM I saw a commercial on cable TV about Cholesterin, it says you can eat what you like and still reduce your cholesterol. Sounds silly. Sponsor ARIZONA73 04-05-2003, 11:53 AM I agree. This sounds like a rather deceptive sales pitch to me, to imply that you can continue to eat anything you want and still lower your cholesterol. No doubt this is poor and misleading salesmanship, but you also have to understand that there are a great many people out there who lack the will and the desire to adopt good eating habits. These people are easily lured into buying such products with the mistaken belief that they need not make any meaningful dietary and lifestyle changes. Although I have no knowledge of this particular product, or what it contains, there are other formulations on the market as well. Even though I am convinced that a high intake of antioxidants, along with some other targeted nutritional supplements, can be of considerable value to cardiovascular health, it must be accompanied by proper diet and the avoidance of junk foods. Rixtar 04-10-2003, 05:18 PM I broke down and bought some of this for $30 there are 60 tablets so it is should last about 20 days for my Aunt. She is 85 with 226 cholesterol. Her doctor put her on Zocor and told her to stop eating the grapefruit her brother sends her from Texas. Well, she was upset that her treat was being taken away I told look 226 is nothing for being 85 years old and if you like grapefruit eat, jeez enjoy your life. I meam 226 is not that high for someone in her age group. So I got this for her and she is taking it without ther Zocor. The label says that it will lower cholesterol by blocking it from entering the body. It will prevent new cholesterol from entering so your HDL can reduce you LDL. Clinical study information was touted so I figured for that amount of money vs. Zocor who knows. ARIZONA73 04-10-2003, 08:25 PM Rixtar--I don't know what your aunt's medical history is, or what her other lipid numbers are, but a total cholesterol level of 226 is hardly any reason to panic. So, why this doctor has elected to prescribe Zocor, a powerful statin drug with numerous potentially serious side-effects, to an elderly 85 year-old woman is simply beyond my comprehension. Perhaps someone else on this board can rationalize this, but I can't. Rixtar 04-15-2003, 03:38 PM My thoughts exactly. I am a proponent of doing whatever it takes to improve the quality of life through science and medical means. However, this smacks of some sort of way to inflate someone's medical costs. |
