The one thing that Robert Atkins had, which much of the rest of the medical community lacks, was sincere integrity. He cared so much about truly helping patients, rather than simply masking an existing medical condition by administering drugs. Drugs can do harm, as many users of statin drugs have found out. There is a creed, which should be engraved in the minds of all doctors who have successfully completed their medical training. This creed simply states "First, do no harm." I wonder how many doctors today abide by this principal, or are they simply interested in being drug pushers for the pharmaceutical industry. I believe that Robert Atkins was a man who, until the end, lived up to that sacred oath--"First, do no harm." May God bless you, Robert Atkins.

I trust my doctors. I think Dr. Atkins was just trying to let us see there may be other ways to help us with our problems not just the drugs. Most doctors are just trying to help us and if drugs are the only way they know what else can they do? I bought a book by Dr. Atkins, Age Defying Diet, and I'm going to try that to see if I can lower my blood pressure and cholesterol.

I also have a copy of "Dr. Atkins' Age-Defying Diet." It is an excellent book, and I'm sure you will find it very informative.

You make a very valid point when you stated that doctors are simply practicing medicine in the manner in which they were taught. They certainly appear to be in the habit of prescribing drugs for just about every malady imaginable. Although I believe that they are treating patients with the best of intentions, most know little, if anything about alternative medicine.

Complementary Medicine, which is what Dr. Atkins practiced, combines the best of both worlds, that of mainstream medicine and nutritional alternatives. While this branch of medicine still consists of a relatively small percentage of practitioners, it is my hope that the numbers will grow substantially over the next several years. I feel that this would result in vastly improved medical care for virtually everyone. I think that the public as a whole will embrace this new concept, and will develop a more positive attitude toward healthcare, and a much better relationship with their doctors as well.

Although it is encouraging that so many people are acquiring an interest in nutritional alternatives, it is often not enough to simply follow the advice given in a book. Even with nutritional alternatives, it is best that the patient work closely with a physician who is proficient in this field. Otherwise, it would be like taking shots in the dark, trying out different nutritional supplements, or various combinations of things, and not knowing precisely how much or what to take. For this reason, such a do it yourself approach would place you at a distinct and serious disadvantage.
