My ankle has been a little swollen and sore for months, I have no idea why. The other day I stepped up one step to go into my sunroom and it felt like it popped and hurt but then it was ok. About two weeks later (last Sat.morning) I woke up and it was really sore and hurt to walk. It started swelling and now it's so sore I can hardly walk. It
doesn't hurt like gout but it hurts to stand for any length of time. I have to sit with it up to get any relief. Can anyone tell what this might be? I don't have insurance so going to the doctor is my last resort.
Thanks for any help.

Have you injured that ankle at any point in the past? Is it red, bruised, or normal color? Where is the pain, precisely? Does it hurt when you are resting, or only when standing/walking? Is the swelling in any particular part of the ankle? Can you move it as far as the other one, or is the range of motion limited?

I haven't injured it that I know of. The other day I was sitting in the yard pulling weeds and when I got up I might have twisted it. I am 56 and have arthritis in some of my joints so I thought maybe that was part of it. When it first came up the little leeder that runs up beside my ankle was sore like I had been hit in it. It's a little red. It hurts when I walk or standing is really bad. I sit in my recliner with it up and it's fine. I just can't figure out what happened to cause this.

Hard to say exactly what's going on. Try icing it and not using it much for a few days, if that doesn't work, you might have to see a doctor.

Icing is 30 minutes at a time, several times a day.
