There are basically three forms of herpes virus: Simplex 1; Simplex 2 and Herpes Zoster. The scientific community may argue that there are variants within those types but that is a technicality.
Simplex 1 mainly affects the area around the mouth and Simplex 2 mainly affects the genitals but they can both affect either area.
Herpes Zoster is the chicken pox variety that remains dormant in the body and can emerge at times of stress in the form of shingles, usually on the front and back of the torso. It is also contagious and can cause chicken pox in contacts who have not previously had it.
