I just (about half hour ago) took my first dose of Citalopram (Celexa). My doc started me on 10mg day, which I believe to be rather low. As I said in a previous post, I'm terrified of possible gastro side effects (or any side effects, but mostly those). Does anyone know how likely I'll be to experience those side effects on this type of dose? I know everyone's different, but thought I'd ask. I should say I'm on it primarily for anxiety, with some depression features.
Thanks.

Hi, That does seem rather low doseage. I just took my first dose about 45 min. ago. My doc gave me 40mg. I'm also taking it for anxiety and depression. First he put me on Celabrex. It made me so sick at my stomach after only 2 days. So now I'm trying this one. I hope yours work for you. I'm so tired of feeling the way I do. Sometimes I feel like it's all in my head or I'm going out of my mind. Oh an also he put me on Xanax for my nerves. I have no patience and seem to be ovewhelmed at times. Ha! You may not want to reply to me I sound like a druggie. HaHa....But we are all on here for some reason aren't we? I just want to feel better........

I was on Lexapro for six months. which is ecitalopram (very closely related chemically to citalopram). The SSRI's do tend to have gastro side effects. If GERD is your concern..the first week or so I was on Lexapro I was refluxing severely almost constantly. This went away after a week or so. I have GERD am already on 2 Prevacids daily. If you are not someone whom suffers from reflux perhaps you will not experience this.. Greg

Or you may not get GI affects at all. I have been on Zoloft, Celexa, Effexor and am now on Lexapro. A bit of extra thirst, headaches, and lack of sex drive are what I felt. No GI that I recall, and if it was there it was trivial. I switched last to Lexapro and the sexual side effects don't seem to be there. You are on a minimum dose. I wouldn't expect anything (Y)

hi there, i have been on celexa for almost 4 years now. I started on 10mg a day also. I didnt have any trouble with side effects at all. Not even an upset tummy. After a couple months my doc upped my dose to 20mg and have been on 20 since then. it worked wonders for my anxiety and depression. i wish you luck

I think if you are going to have serious side effects from Citalopram, you will see it within the first dose. At least, that's what I experienced.
Two years ago, my doctor prescribed Zoloft for me (what he said was a small dosage) and my body went into tremors, I had extreme nausea and hot and cold flashes within the first dose. When I told him my side effects, he urged me to try another day and I did. The results were the same only magnified. Most recently actually the day before yesterday I went to a new doctor and she prescribed me 20mg of Citalopram and wanted me to begin immediately. I went to bed and woke up at 4am feeling really "drugged," clenching my jaw and fists with EXTREME nausea and I felt very detached from reality. I was bummed because I was praying that this time something would work and help me get my life back. My new doctor advised me to discontinue Citalopram immediately and we'll find something new. I'm so sensitive to medication that I can't even take birth control, so I hope that through all of this we'll find the right dosage and the right medication.

Actually I do recall jaw pain, either when I was dosing up with Zoloft for the first time, or when I was messing with the dosage of Effexor trying to dial it down enough to get my sex drive back. No jaw pain of anything else with the Lexapro. They are all similar, but each different SSRI is a chance for different side effects. I am very happy with Lexapro.

Everyone is different, and you may be ok. I had gastro problems with citaprolam, and also with all the ssri's. Cannot take them. They increased my anxiety, and gave me gastro problems. But you may luck out with this one. Good luck.
