A friend of mine warned me that she new a some people who have apparently had to have their teeth removed due to their gums loosening while on Lipitor. Now I have heard about possible liver damage, but nothing about this.
Has anyone experienced or heard anything about this?

It's a very real possibility. Lipitor, and the other statin drugs interfere with your body's production of coenzyme Q-10. That is why many doctors advise patients who are taking these drugs to take coenzyme Q-10 supplements. One of the symptoms of coenzyme Q-10 depletion is gum disease.

thanks so much, thats a very useful comment. You wouldn't happen to know if coenzyme Q-10 supplements come under another name, or would I just ask for coenzyme Q-10 supplements at my local store?
thanks

No, there is no other name for it. It's simply called coenzyme Q-10. There are several brands available, as well as different potencies.

Steve,
Incidentally, there is a hydrosoluble form of coenzyme Q-10 that goes by the name Q-Gel, which is supposed to be much better absorbed. I'm not sure if any of the stores carry it, but it can be ordered. If you do a search for it, you will find some suppliers.

Hi.
Since I have been on Zocor for 4 months now, maybe I should look into taking Coenzyme Q-10 also. What mgs. do you take daily? So you think, that being on Statins, you need this also? Interesting. Thx Arizona, you are always a great help.

I take 60mg per day, and I'm not even taking statins. But many doctors today are advising their patients who are taking statins to supplement with coenzyme Q-10. It's important to understand that after the age of 25, our body's production of this coenzyme gradually declines. So the older we get, the less coenzyme Q-10 is in our bodies. Statins will cause further depletion of this important enzyme. Dosages vary, but the suggested intake is generally between 50-150mg.

Thx Arizona.
Next question. Somewhere I read that if you have arthritis, you shouldn't take Coenzyme Q-10. I take 1500 mgs of Glucosamine Sulfate daily for Chrondomalacia of the knees...which I think is a technical name for plain arthritis of the knees. I was about to order some Coenzyme, then I got to thinking, maybe I shouldn't take it after all. Probably should contact my doctor. Thx for your input.

JeanneMarie,
No, I've never heard that people with arthritis should avoid taking coenzyme Q-10. In fact, from what I have read, it may actually be beneficial for arthritis sufferers. Where did you hear or read that people with arthritis should not take it?

You asked where I read that, danged if I know. I have been searching this web site, for it's here I think I saw it, but could be elsewhere also.
Under my name it says 'Senior Member'...well that senior member is having a senior moment.....lol.
When I figure out where I read it, I'll clue you in. Patience.
