My sister is 29, and craving salt by the spoonfuls. She was eating it last night from my salt shaker, and was asking me if I had any coarse salt, like rock salt that she could eat. I am worried about her, and I am trying to get her in to see my doctor. I would love any help and advice anybody could give. What could this mean?

Thank you,

Kassandra

She could be dehydrated. Has she been ill lately or sweating alot.

Sometimes if you have had a "BUG" you crave salt.

And then some people crave salty and not sweet things.

Salt craving can indicate something as simple as various mineral deficiencies, but it can also be from very serious disorders like adrenal exhaustion. Salt cravings have also been linked to serious health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and sickle cell anemia. If she hasn't always craved salt to this degree and if it's a more recent thing, she needs to see a doctor to rule out the serious stuff.

If it is sudden and a big issue, she may have Addison's disease. See a doctor ASAP. Sera

Thank you all, yes, this is sudden thing, it came up over the last couple of days. I got her an appt. for my doctor to see her on Tuesday, but should she been seen earlier? She could go to the walk in clinic or er. She also craves crunchy, like ice, but she would like to eat rock salt out of the bag I would use on my driveway in the winter, but I wont let her.

I have read about addisons, and the others. She is taking her hand and filling it with salt and dumping it in her mouth, like you would peanuts. It is weird, but I am not going to let her no see a doctor, people from downeast can be very stuborrn and let it go, but I have made an appt. so we will see.

I thank you all for your help and would love more, so I can show her, she is staying with me for the weekend.

Thanks again.

From what I know about adrenals/Addison's - and it's only a little - seeing the doc on Tuesday is probably fine. I don't think it's an emergency situation, but why don't you post the question on the Addison's Disease Healthboard just to be sure, if you don't get the answer here.

Let us know what happens, OK?

I believe I read that craving ice is a sign of anemia.

Craving and eating things like salt, ice or even clay or chalk, is called Pica.

Pica is eating non food items. Salt and ice are food. (or well, water and a mineral that we all need.)

Generally Pica is a craving for something not normally considered nutritive - but the item/s craved could be nearly anything. A pregnant woman craving pickles and ice cream is considered Pica.
