Hello to all of you helpful friends on here!

I was wondering...I recently went to the doctor and my trigs were 511,total chol: 193......I am 28 years old and I was on Lipitor for awhile and was having muscle weakness & pain....I was taken off of it and now she wants me to take Pravachol...well...I am sooo scared about the side effects and would love to be able to lower my trigs without it...I haven't started taking it yet....I know to try & cut back on sugar & fats, but I was wondering about the fish oil (Omega-3?). I am also on Lexapro 10mg daily for panic attacks....would it be safe to take them together?? Any advice on what to take or do will be so appreciated!

Thanks bunches!

funfun,

Surest way to lower triglycerides is to to severely restrict carbohydrates by slashing starches and virtually ELIMINATING sugar of all kind....and that includes beer, milk, sugared sodas and fruit juices.

You will be AMAZED at the quick fall in triglycerides.

It's basically any variant on the severe ATKINS type diet, or with more carbs, almost the ZONE.

Basically any diet with carbs from 0 to 30% with virtually no quick acting sugars will give you good results.

Funfun,First of all you are way too young to be on cholesterol meds im not sure what your doc was thinking your numbers are not that high. When i was 29 had my cholestrol checked because of a high family history of heartattacks and my total was 229 i was told to cut some fat out i tryed but i basically eat whatever i want but i did start taking fish oil (i heard great for heart) and garlic and also multi-vitamin.When i went back a year later my total was 186 so i guess something helped.

Thank you both for your replies!! I myself agree that I am too young to be put on the cholesterol meds....by what you said I am thinking it would be okay for me to try the fish oil and garlic??? I am trying to cut out my sugars, etc. as well....was your trigs up as well savana? I am worried since mine are so high that I may develop diabetes...my doctor has me scared because she says it is very dangerous that they are up to 511 and she says it is very serious, but I am so afriad of the meds side effects...I had the trouble with Lipitor and now she wants me to try Pravachol.....should I go ahead and try the fish oil first, does doctors say its okay?

Thanks a billion!

What is your history regarding triglyceride numbers? How often has it been tested this high? Are all your tests on a COMPLETE fast.

Any doctor who would prescribe a statin for a total cholesterol of 193 should have his shingle shoved where the "sun don't shine"...it's malpractice.

Really, really, really, go on a low carb diet and test your triglycerides after 30 days. You will be DUMBFOUNDED!

The most effective treatment to lower Triglycerides is the vitamin niacin. However, Taking a dose high enough to lower the Tri's {1500-2000mg} has side effects, causes flushing and can cause liver damage. There is a FDA approved extended release form of Niacin which lessen these side effects. It is called Niaspan. I have been on Niaspan since late 1997. I had flushing initially but it went away as I got used to the medication. An aspirin taken 30 minutes before taking the Niaspan helps. Also a non fat snack taken with the Niaspan helps. Niaspan is taken only one time a day at bedtime. I just yesterday got my latest cholesterol report which I listed on the Niaspan message board. Good luck.

I have to dissagree with the statement that you are too young to be on medication. I started meds when I was 18, and am now 28 with unmedicated cholesterol above 380. Medicated, my levels are at an all time low of 239. I also have a family history of heart attacks and deaths at very young ages though. I do think any doctor that prescribes statins with a total cholesterol level as low as yours should not be practicing medicine.

Thanks all! I just looked at my print out of my total cholesterol and I was wrong....my total isn't 193, but get this....173!!!

What I need to work on is bringing my "good" (HDL) up...it's only 30 and my trigs down. I have started walking 2 miles a day and watching my fats & sugars and I may start the fish oil & garlic...hope it works. The walking each day does give me alot more energy!!!

Thanks again to you all...you are great!

My triglycerides went down to normal for the first time in my life on Dr. Sear's Fish Oil supplements.
I don't sell them or anything and they are somewhat expensive, but they are the only ones that worked for me.
