I've tried sleeping with my cpap and for some reason I wake up every 3-4 hours into my sleep. I wake up ripping the mask off my face. It's very hot inside the mask, it's like there's no air coming thru. Has anyone had this problem? I was thinking the pressure isn't set right. My doctor says I might have to do another sleep study. If I do I'm going to ask to take the machine I'm using instead of the one at the study. Thanks

The pressures may not be set correctly...or it may be a combo of things. I find I rip off my mask when I get congested, and identifying the source of my congestion, and treating the congestion also helps.
I have a machine with a smart card so my respirations can be downloaded into the computer at the doctors office and he can evaluate my needs there...unless I'm missing something here, I think a machine with a smart card would be more cost efficient and accurate than doing a second sleep study....but I agree with you about using your own equipment for the purpose of the study.
Do you clean the filters on your machine regularly? I think that may impact the efficiency of one's equipment.

Thanks for the response, I do have a smart card and I told my dr. about the issues I was having. That's when he said I need to do another study. I really think he doesn't know what the heck he's talking about. I took the machine to the people who set it up and had it tested. They don't know what's going either. They tested the machine and said it was fine, talk to your dr. I have severe back problems and not getting any sleep. I just want to be able to sleep on my back in peace.

... I really think he doesn't know what the heck he's talking about....
I wouldn't be surprised. I made the mistake of thinking my sleep specialist knew the basics and from what I can gather, he missed a few (overlooked med side effects and electrolyte deficiencies causing periodic limb movements).
...I took the machine to the people who set it up and had it tested.
Excellent idea...which reminds me, I think we are supposed to have our machines checked once a year.

I'm really sorry about your back and sleep problems...every ache and pain is so much worse when we're not rested. Are you still waking up every 3-4 hours with a hot mask? Is it a regular event or sporadic? Is it possible there is a connection to the meds you take now and the events? I ask because blood pressure meds made me wake up at different times during the night...I woke up at 1:30 every am with the water pill....and I woke up at midnight and 3 am with amlodipine....and I have since learned that many meds cause sleep problems. We just don't associate our meds with sleep.
Do hope you are able to find some restorative sleep on a regular basis.
Take care.

I have a humidifyer with my machine and it stays cool. You might suggest that to your doctor since your mask get so hot.

My husband has a machine with a humidifyer as well. Before he has that type of machine he too was ripping off his mask saying that it was hot, he couldn't breath...etc. In addition...he had someone come to the house and set it there. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply, I do have a humidifier on mine. I'll try that tonight. I didn't have a very good dr. to tell me about the cpap or information in general about sleep apnea. 3-4 hours of asleep is just not getting it done for me. Thanks

Do you have a nasal mask or a full face mask? If it's a nasal mask, you may be opening your mouth inadvertently in your sleep. You know how if you open your mouth with the mask on the air comes shooting out? Some people wake up in almost a panic when that happens because they feel like they're not getting enough air. You could try a chin strap or a full face mask.
If you're feeling claustrophobic in the mask, you could switch to a mask with pillows. They're like little plugs that fit in your nostrils. We have a contract with Resmed at our lab, and theirs is called the Swift mask, but I'm sure all the major CPAP companies make something similar. It's a really popular mask for us.
